The foliage on all my Cranesbill are looking awful about now, and I wondered if I cut off all the foliage would it grow back in clean for the rest of the season?

on all my

==>>> inferring more than one???

yes??

then go at one.. give it a week.. and see how it reacts...

it will either re-bud ... upon which observation you will do the rest ..

or it wont.. whereupon .. you will be glad you didnt do the rest ...

by the time you get a specific answer .. you might be a week behind observation..

i would have done one.. in less time than posting a question here... eh???

I cut back G. magnificum to the ground after it flowers, and it always rebounds beautifully within ~2 wks to form neat, healthy mounds of foliage.

I'm not sure about other types, but I'm thinking probably could. Why don't you try cutting back a clump that isn't in too conspicuous of a spot and see what happens.

Thanks. Good idea Ken to try one and see how it works. I'll try the one I am not so crazy about...lol.

mk3, another good idea, one in an inconspicuous place.

Thankyou.... :-)

I was about to just yank all of mine out of the ground but thanks - I will try just cutting it back!

I've always found it takes forever for my geraniums to rebound after cutting back- particularly in the heat of summer.

My whacking them back to the ground depends largely on what type it is. The pratense get mildew terribly here so I kind of just use them as a filler and chop them back to the ground after blooming. Otherwise I really hate to cut off much and have a gaping hole for so long, so now tend to now give the rest a half-way haircut. Oftentimes I will cut back to the "joint" of the plant (where the main stems branch out) so that it hides the chop job a bit, lol.

Hi, I'm in your zone.....magnificum gets cut all the way back soon after blooming and grows back without missing a step.No rebloom.
Usually sanguinium and macrorrizum don't need a haircut. However in this heat-without-rain they are yellowing. I have two "fields' of them as groundcovers so I either have to turn my head away as I walk by or get the guys who mow the lawn to run over them with the mower. Or maybe use the weedwacker....which means re-stringing it, killing my shoulder and putting on ear and eye protection. I think mowing sounds easiest. They do not normally rebloom.
I may have Max Frei; I know I have some oxy.......somethings with a woman's name (Mrs. something something)....A.T Johnson...... Max got 3 feet tall and was amputated at the ankles.Don't remember if he reblooms
Mrs.A.T.J....just got propped up until she too started to yellow this week, then got cut back.
The fact is there are not a lot of geraniums, except Rozanne and Samobar, that are rebloomers in our climate. Rozanne just looks like you know what by August if you don't trim it back.
Samobar, watch out for self seedlings. They are often not true to parent, have minimal leaf markings, and muddy flowers. Otherwise, a good seedling offspring can look great.
More than you asked for. Generally, YES you can cut them back and they'll grow back. I'd suggest if it it is really hot/dry to water them so they'll grow back lush.

ida, you're a zone colder than me, so I don't know if you'd get the same results but 'Patricia' has been blooming non stop for me all summer long.

You can see it here:

If I had bothered deadheading it, it probably would have flowered even more.

3 feet is way to tall for "Max"! My established MFs get about a foot or so in height and maybe a bit more in breadth. I find they do bloom sporadically in early fall.

I was correct, I don't remember correctly! Regardless of the name, I know a floppy two foot geranium when I see it, and I know what to do to with it.

I don't remember if I tried Patricia. If I did it isn't here anymore.
