I think it helps Ken...but I shouldn't have to tell you that (lol).

Otherwise, they flower in flushes vs continously.

And yes, I have seedlings germinating right now from last year...but in my case I welcome them..thought I lost the plants which were collections of a normally winter hardy L urticoides vs the tropical annuals.

No need to deadhead.

Unfortunately not hardy in MI.

But you can overwinter then. I have had mine for three years now overwintering in cold sunroom :)

The varieties I've seen growing around here usually don't set much seed (as opposed to semi-wild types that seed promiscuously in warm climates) so deadheading would mostly be a matter of improving appearance.

If yours are setting a bunch of seed and you don't want to save it, then deadhead away.

Around here, there is no sense in wasting time fussing with lantanas. Deadheading is accomplished by removing entire branches.

Not hardy in Michigan. When I grew them, I deadheaded, because I like tidy plants.

The berries, when ripe, are very attractive.
Don't know the age of your kids, but you need to know that the berries are poisonous.

I deadhead and they bloom more so then when I don't. The unripened berries are poisonous if that's a concern. Not sure on their ability to overwinter but I think I read a lot of them are hybrids and seeds are sterile or produce weak, weirdo plants. Plus the berries have to fully ripen to a dark dark blue before seeds even really develop.

i taught the kids to leave the house with a baggie of snacks.. and come back to daddy when they needed more food ... they never browsed the yard ... unless it was with me... to learn what was OK ...

but they are teens now.. and hate me.. and wouldnt turn off their technology to walk around the yard if their life depended on it ...

so thx for the heads up.. for the rest of the audience ...

the reason i was looking at it.. was to see if i could prune it into some pleasing shape ... so guy was pretty close to what may happen... if i happen to walk by it with the pruning shears ...

Ken, some hybrids stubbornly stop flowering. Wierdo, like david said. Some don't even set seeds.. I've found that occasional cutting back a few inches is more preferable to simple deadheading....and I know you'll despise hearing this....frequent applications of soluble fertilizer at low dosage promote steady blooming, especially for those stuffed in containers.

You and your family will like to watch all of the activity around your lantana; butterflies, hummingbirds, and (my favorite) different kinds of sphinx moths. Look for them in the early evening hours.

Be watchful for spider mites, the most likely pest. No systemics allowed, though, with all of those nectar feeders.

rhiz ...

i used some old media.. that i used to hold some plants over last summer.. and then planted in fall ....

so i DID FERT IT ... lol ..

but i didnt do it because they are children ... that need to be feed.. educated.. diapered.. etc ...

i did it because the media may have been a bit spent ...
