In general, I have had fantastic experiences with seeds purchased from Jelitto and Hazzard's. Anyone know of any similar wholesale seed companies with retail sales to home gardeners? For smaller quantities of seeds (and for more money overall), I have enjoyed Gardens North and Chiltern. So tell me, what are your favorite suppliers of rare, unusual, uncommon and *viable* seeds of ornamental garden plants?

I've had good luck with JL Hudson Seedsman and the Fragrant Path.

Plantworld - no question. Ray Brown is a knowledgeable nurseryman (not just a seed merchant) and I have always enjoyed excellent germination from all his seeds. He ships to the US too. Recently, I ordered a batch of Syabru geraniums....which turned out to be white pyrenaicum types. I got an immediate refund, plus another dozen extra seeds. Best of all, you are dealing with a person, rather than a nameless company rep.

I have ordered from GeoSeed a few times with good results. I don't think of them as carrying rare plants, but they do offer a great selection, for example over 25 digitalis to choose from. Flat shipping charge of $5 if you spend under $100.

Thank you all for more great suggestions! :-) Campanula, thank you for the insight into Plant World. Believe it or not, I have been eyeing the Geranium 'Syabru' seeds for several weeks now. Do you think I would actually get the correct variety if I ordered them now?

yep - not only did Ray send me another packet, he also added an extra dozen.....and they are all germinating right now (along with soboliferum)

J.L. Hudson, the Fragrant Path, Pinetree and (especially) Chiltern have been good and reliable sources of interesting seed for me.

Thank you all for your wonderful input! I decided to try out Plant World since their selection looked amazing. I e-mailed a question and was surprised to see a response from Ray in less than two hours! I ended up ordering: Geranium 'Syabru' And I have been so happy with the quality of seeds from Jelitto that I placed another order, this time for: Meconopsis cambrica (Gold Nugget; pre-treated for quick germination) So, yes, I have gone a bit columbine crazy! I have been so pleased with my pre-existing swarm of granny's bonnets that came with my house that I would like to work on them a bit and add different colors and fragrance into the mix.
