In love with your blue delphiniums... those are so awesome. For some reason I don't have much luck with them where I am.

What are the blue flowers, fourth picture? So adorable!

    Lovely photos all around.

The blue flowers are Hepaticas - actually spring flowering ephemerals, as are the Disporum flavum in picture 2.

That hepatica picture is stunning jujujojo. Do you know which specific variety is the one shown?

So nice 'Sunny'. (Can I see a "Culver's Root" in your second picture?)

    Thanks, Rouge.

    Yes.
    That's 'Fascination'.
Culver's root is very long-lived here.

Pretty, pretty! Love those borders, Sunny!

And you're right, you can do one pic per post with the in-house facility, not at all uncommon to do it the way you did. If you use an outside photo-hosting site, you can put multiple pics in 1 post that way.

Check out the hummingbird DH caught visiting butterfly bush (Buddleia.)

crunchpa, is that veronica 'purplelicious'? It certainly is an eye catcher.

purpleinopp, I'm very imprssed by that pic! I've never managed to get a picture of a hummer.

eric, that silene is beautiful. I don't think I've ever seen that plant here.

  • crunchpa

a2zmom ...I do not have a name for the Veronica but I enjoy the color and long bloom. It divides easy and has given me no issues. If anyone can ID it please do.

Crunchpa, I have a strong, strong suspicion that your veronica is just a Lythrum salicaria(at least it looks exactly like it on this picture). A close-up picture is necessary to tell.

  • crunchpa

I had wondered about it. It was previously Id'd on this website as Veronica. Clarification would be helpful.

FYI....I have never had any seedlings from this plant. They have been 3ft tall. In a couple spots they were not very vigorous and seemed non aggressive everywhere.

  • crunchpa

It does seem to be a Lythrum cultivar. I grabbed a division from a friends yard sometime ago. It was a professionally designed yard so I assume this may be Mordens Pink. Yes?

Crunch, does your crocosmia over winter in ground?

Eric, perfect picture of perennials along a curved path. Love it!

Sunny, is that helenium a particularly early flowering variety?

Off to grumble about how the deer eat everything in my sunny border.
    Helenium-check
    Phlox-check
    Culvers root-check
    Rudbeckia goldstrum-check
    Veronica-check
    Day lily-check
    Etc etc!

  • crunchpa

Yes the Crocosmia does over winter and has spread nicely in a few years. This is the best it has looked. The soil is sandy-ish, being next to Lake Erie. Lots of snow in winter. I over winter Calla with no problem. I get better performance than if I lifted them. White Calla.

Crunchpa, it is definitely Lythrum salicaria. It is selfsterile and NEVER makes seedlings if alone (it needs another clone to "make sex" with). It does not spread by runners as it is a clumper. My plant is more than 30 years old and never a single seedling.

Cruchpa, it really is a pretty plant. It's probably also on the banned list in your state, even though it's a sterile cultivar.

  • wieslaw59

a2zmom, it's the whole species that is selfsterile, not only this cultivar. Whatever plant you take, it cannot make babies with itself. Wonderful. JFTR.

Interesting and lovely pictures, All, and thanks for comments.

    Lythrum, as Wieslaw says.

I do use several Lythrum salicaria cultivars, 'Morden Pink' and 'Rosy Gem' (latter in one of my pictures above) and L. anceps (Japanese form), all carefully. I have had 'Rosy Gem' lose it's self-incompatability and produce seedlings, in one situation, but only once in 15 years. I removed and destroyed all of it from that location.

Yes, Trove, it's actually called 'Sahin's Early Flowerer'.
As you note, it's quite early for Helenium to be flowering here.

So many beautiful pictures. This is one of my 6 garden areas. Just in its prime on July 20th when we celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary at our farm. Conditions were completely different than last year with all of our rain this year.

wagonwheel, that's a great grouping. Lots of color which I love.
