My oldest Ostrich fern, which has always been rather vigorous, got toasted - I didn't notice it was frying and neglected to water it. It was getting on my last nerve since it is right smack in front of a large picture window, so I cut it down even though it was still green to some extent. My question is - will it return next year even though I cut it down so early?

Hey - I finally got sprinklers put in two weeks ago, maybe regular watering will help ---> if I ever get around to actually setting the timer

Yes, it'll be back next year. That crown and underground system can't be killed by anything devised. Many of mine are in full sun - no sign of frying yet. It's not so hot out here and - God knows - we've had plenty of rain. 12" above normal so far.

It was getting on my last nerve since it is right smack in front of a large picture window ==>> i seem to recall it very shaded by the front door.. is it under some ginormous maple???? ken

It's not shady by my front door - are you thinking of someone else's door, perhaps? The fern is in one of the back beds, facing north, shaded in the afternoon and evening but gets nice morning sun from the east.
