I was at my favorite nursery on Tuesday, and decided to pass up on a gorgeous, bright orange Crocosmia. After deciding I just had to have it, I went back on Friday and it was gone.
Anyone know where I could buy some of the corms online? I've looked everywhere and can't find anything (other than from England).
Anywhere in the U.S.? I didn't see the name of them, but they were intense, bright orange. I'm kicking myself now.
Thanks. |

| I often see these in the spring in catalogs that deal mainly in bulbs - like dahlias, glads etc., but can't think of any names offhand. |

| See if this url will help. I, too, want some of these since I saw them at a friends house, and I think I will give this vendor a try. On the description when I searched for crocosmia this co. had 38 reviews on Dave's Garden - 36 positive and 2 neutral. I believe they are in NY. Jane |

| Sorry if I misled you with the first url. I went back and read their welcome page and it looks like they are closing/closed. There is a telephone number. I always do a Google search and usually get many hits. I am including another url showing additional crocosmia vendors. Good luck. Jane |

| I bought my Crocosmia from Brent and Becky's bulbs. They are some tough little plants and multiply like crazy. I am especially fond of 'Emberglow' which is a red one. Unfortunately, they only sell them for spring planting. |

Thanks everyone, I'm kicking myself even more now that I've spent tons of time searching online for the crocosmia that I passed up. I'm having trouble finding any that are as neon-orange as the one I saw. I guess I'll have to wait until next year and hopefully I'll come across it again. I'm waiting to hear back from the buyer at the nursery, and hopefully she can give me the exact name. Sometimes I get a little obsessive about finding something! It sort of turns into like searching for the holy grail!" haha Thanks for your help. |

Will you please post the name if you find it.I also, have been looking, I saw this at a house in another town, wish I had stopped and asked the name. I will keep checking back here to see if you did indeed find it. Hi every one, my name is cAROL.I have posted here a few times.:0) cAROL |

| Are these really hardy in zone 5? I haven't had much luck with Lucifer - last a few years and then gone. I know that there have been threads on the hardiness of Crocosmia in the colder zones. Lucifer was supposed to be hardier than many others. |

| Here the orange I have...I believe it's called Orangeade...got it from Joy Creek Nurseries in Oregon...this is just before the buds open.

| Might want to think twice before spending major money ordering Crocosmia if you live in a colder zone. Sorry to say that both the 'Lucifer' and 'Emily McKenzie' Crocosmias I bought last spring died over the winter. There is only one thin stalk of my several year-old 'George Davidson', and my 'Emberglow' (five years old) has been reduced from a large clump to half the size. I mulched heavily (HEAVILY) in the fall, but our freakish lack of snow cover this past winter must have made them get hit hard with the cold. Up until now I had been so pleased with how hardy they seemed in my zone. Guess all it takes is one strange winter to kill/significantly reduce them ;-C If you really have to have them (and want to insure they don't die out completely) one can always dig up the corms in fall, store as you would other tender bulbs and tubers, and replant every spring. Hope you have better luck with yours if you decide to get them!! I am still mourning the loss of mine- it is a wound that will not heal quickly, LOL. CMK |

I'm comforting myself by thinking that it probably wouldn't have made it over the winter. But my lucifer is going crazy! I planted it about 2 years ago, and its doing great. I did put bags of leaves over it last winter though. We did have a fair amount of snow, so I think that helped insulate them. Scotty.....I'll bet yours is gorgeous when it opens up. |

Catherinet, what state are you located in? If you're having luck with 'Lucifer' you may also have some luck with 'Walcroy'. Mine has come up for a couple years now and at the local nursery here it comes up with no problems. It might not be as neon orange as you were looking for, but it's probably more cold hardy than others.

| thyme2dig, what a very pretty plant! |
RE: Where to buy bright orange Crocosmia?

In in central Indiana. Thyme2dig....thanks for that tip. cAROL, the lady who's in charge of the nursery that I was at emailed me back and said that it was probably "George Davidson". But all those that I've seen on the Internet are light yellow. This is the nursery that I've gotten several mis-labeled plants from....so maybe I have to take her info with a grain of salt! My short-term memory isn't so great these days, and I'm wondering if I only saw the buds on the crocosmia there, and they were very orange.......but maybe they are more yellow when they open up? I just can't for the life me remember if the flowers were opened or not. All I remember is this incredibly bright orange color at the top of a crocosmia. This manager told me they'd have more in the spring, so I'll check back then. But I've sort of learned my lesson at this nursery....only buy things with blooms on them, or I might get a surprise. (I bought irises that were the wrong color, echinacea that were the wrong color, pickerel rush that were the wrong color.......none of which were blooming yet). So....you might keep your eyes open for George Davidson, but I can't swear that it will be orange! I might just go with whatever is hardier, since I have no desire to dig up corms in the Fall. Just too much else to do at that time! |

Thanks Catherinet, I will look this one up.I appreciate your remembering me, :0) cAROL |

| Catherinet, i have george davidson and it is neon orange on the outside and a paler neon orange/yellow on the inside. I have enough i could divide for you if you want to email me? It has grown so much id never know it was divided in no time! When i first read your posting i thought i had what you are looking for, but as soon as you mentioned the name i realized i definatly do . |
RE: Where to buy bright orange Crocosmia?

| When George Davidson is in a spot it likes, it attempts to take over the world. :oP I've actually run out of local friends to give it to and ended up throwing it away the last time I thinned it out. It is one of those tall guys that will overrun the nearby plants if you let it. Even drought at the height of summer doesn't seem to put a dent in it. It just dies back early and then comes back like gangbusters the next year.

RE: Where to buy bright orange Crocosmia?

| For anyone in zone 5 or colder that is planning on buying crocosmia now (July) or in the fall, plant them in pots and keep them in your cold cellar over the winter, or you can try keeping them like glads, just dry in paper bags or old panty hose. In the spring start watering them in the pots and plant them in the garden in May. |

| Thanks for that tip ontnative. |
RE: Where to buy bright orange Crocosmia?

| Here's my OrangeAde blooming now! It seems to be as vigorous as the other varieties above. This has gone from one little bunch of leaves last fall when I planted it, to a nice bunch about 18" across with a dozen or more blooming stems...I'm curious how much it will spread by next year!

RE: Where to buy bright orange Crocosmia?

Wow....that's really pretty! I have a little stand of lucifer next to my little pond. But the leaves have fallen over. Do you have that problem too? I'm thinking of putting up a little decorative fence to hold them up next year. Scotty...."orangeAde" is a perfect name for that one. Makes me thirsty. haha |

I've had no problem with fall planting crocosmia. All have lived. The area is totally exposed to wind and the soil is clay loam. |

| just emailed you back!!! :) |
RE: Where to buy bright orange Crocosmia?

| The crocosmia that I ordered from Big Dipper Farm are arriving in the next day or two. I ordered 4 varieties and this is the description of what they will send - "purchase consists of 2 blooming sized corms. They have been planted and will be barerooted if dormant, shipped in a 3x3x5.5'' pot if in active growth". My friend planted her corms in the fall so I hope these will have a chance to root well. I will be protecting them over winter. I will let you know how they look when they arrive, and also the varieties. Has anyone else ordered at this late date? Thank you. Jane |
RE: Where to buy bright orange Crocosmia?

| I planted crocosmia for the first time last fall, most of them died, I dug up the last 4 and put them in a pot because they looked like they were dying too. It has been extremely hot here but I have watered well and often, what can I be doing wrong? |
RE: Where to buy bright orange Crocosmia?

| Did you get your plant? I have very hardy bright orange crocosmia I just thinned. I have lots. Do you want some? |
RE: Where to buy bright orange Crocosmia?

Thanks Bonnie, I did find some George Davidson crocosmia. They sold them at Lowe's last spring. Thanks for thinking of me though! |
RE: Where to buy bright orange Crocosmia?

| A bright orange-red you might consider is 'Distant Planet'. It came out of the now closed Seneca Hills Perennials in upper state New York. I've planted it in several places in my garden and it has survived 5 Chicago winters. The oldest clump is now about 3 feet across. I believe Lazy Susan's mailorder nursery sells it. |
