It's too hot to work outside, so instead I'm already looking for plants for the fall. But looking at the Bluestone website, they have gone to larger pots (not three packs), and have increased the prices as well. The reason I've purchased from them in the past is the affordability of the small sizes. Now it would be much cheaper to buy locally (no S/H). But, of course, no where near the selection in my rural area. So, I was wondering what the rest of you thought--do you think the change is positive or negative?

I'm glad to see the changes. I don't want three plants in many cases. I'd rather get a single good sized plant. I bet they've had lots of complaints about the small plants. Many times I've ordered from them and only one of the tiny plants was alive in the first place and they had to replace them.

I think this is disappointing. I'm glad they are going to the coir pots, but I liked having the three packs. I think you got more for your money. I never minded the small plants because they all grow so quickly. Plus, the three packs made it easier to share an order with a friend. I took a look at their website before answering, and I think my orders from now on will be much smaller. Sigh - I remember the "good ol days" when you could get a three-pack for $7 to $9. Now that's what they are charging for one - and it's really not all that much bigger. Well, I guess things change. I'm sure this won't stop me from ordering from Bluestone altogether, though... :) Dee

This is unfortunate, for me anyway. I liked the three packs. I like planting plants in threes, makes for a faster clump when planted together or I would spread the plants throughout the bed. And their single plants seem rather pricey, since I can buy locally perennials in four inch pots for four bucks (and right now they are 40% off). So I suppose, unless it is something I really want and can't find anywhere, and they are having their spring clean-out sale, I most likely won't be buying from them again. Dee--I remember those $7-9 days on the three packs too, and it wasn't that long ago. Their prices jumped high really fast in only a few years, most likely due to the rise in gas prices, but their no questions asked guarantee probably didn't help either. Gotta make up the cost somewhere. Maybe the plants will be bigger in those pots, and maybe healthier, but I got some this year in "bigger" pots, and they weren't much bigger than the ones in the three packs, and the three pack babies are growing faster. But, that's my two cents. Karen

I'm so disappointed with my last two purchases that I may be done anyway. I didn't want three of many plants so a choice would have been nice. I never minded how small the three pack plants were.

Bluestone is my go-to for online/ catalog ordering and I've always been thrilled with my purchases so I will continue ordering from them no matter what though I'll have to be more selective. Are you sure this is a permanent change and not just seasonal? I had a big order this spring and most everything was in a 3-pack.

The three pack and the small sizes are the reason I have continued to purchase from Bluestone. Where else could you buy perennials in three packs? Not locally that's for sure. Where else could you buy shrubs in small sizes? It is a much more economical way of purchasing plants. I was just looking at their new pricing for shrubs. Wow, $12.95 for an Abelia in a 3 1/2 inch pot? Sorry, that's way too much money for that size plant. I have purchased many shrubs from them in their usual small size pot. It really does take many seasons for these shrubs to mature. I enjoy watching them grow from small plants to larger ones, but four seasons later most are just getting to a fairly good size. I also appreciate that they are trying to reduce plastic and if the coir pots allow for good pot culture, that would be fine, but I would not ever plant anything in the ground, still in the pot. Peat never worked and I can't see how coir would do any better. I would expect it to slow down the time it took for the plant to establish. I ordered from their last sale and was pretty disappointed with my order. I have always found most plants recover by the next season, but I did find myself wondering if it was worth it to order off the sale. Their spring orders are usually in much better shape. I see from their site, that this will be a permanent change. I will be looking for a nursery that still offers the three pack and small sizes of shrubs for a reasonable price.

PM2, sorry to hear you were disappointed with the last sale order. I was more than pleased with mine - now I'm wishing I had ordered more! I probably do 95% of my plant-buying from Bluestone, but with these higher prices and single pots, I will most likely cut back by quite a bit. Yes, $12.95 for a tiny shrub is way too much when you can get a much bigger one locally for $25 - perhaps it's twice as much, but the shrub is much, much bigger. PM2, please let us know if you find someplace that sells 3-packs. I don't think I have ever come across another place that does, so it would be great to find another source, although to find one with such high quality plants and great customer service will probably be difficult. By the way, why is everything on their site (at least that I noticed) not available till spring 2012, I wonder? Dee

I'm sad about this change also. I've never had any problem with their small plant sizes and the price allowed me to try out plants that I wouldn't have planted otherwise. I am really glad I planted my new bed this year. Using Bluestone saved me hundreds of dollars.

I like the 3-packs too, but imagine that with pots that are so small, it is difficult to keep the plants healthy. They would dry out and outgrow them quickly. Perhaps that is part of the reason for the losses they experienced during the recent sale. Although some people complained about receiving near dead plants in single pots too Also I have a couple 3-packs on back order. I wonder how they will ship those and replace the plants that seem to have died for me - 2 out of 3 Phlox Blue Paradise and 1 out of 3 of the Agastache 'Black Adder'. Unsure how much buying I will do in the future.

Dee, I have purchased from Bluestone, but I also do a lot of local buying as well. I am not an impulse buyer, I will plan on buying at peak sale times, like 50% off trees and shrubs in the fall at the good nurseries locally. I start perennials from seed with winter sowing like you do. I have bought a lot of plants inexpensively at local private sales, like the Three Sisters Sale in May. I have picked up perennials for $3/4. each, a good size cutting of a Viburnum maresii for $9., Hellebores for $7. There are a lot of those type of sales in the spring if you keep your eye out. I won't be looking for a replacement for Bluestone for awhile. I rarely make purchases in the summer months. But there is one that I'm aware of that I've almost ordered from but haven't yet. Sandy Mush Herbs, was a company I read about in an article in one of the larger gardening magazines. They don't exactly offer 3 packs, but they do offer small sizes for good prices. For instance, they have Buxus for $6. each. They don't offer a full line of shrubs, but they have some interesting offerings. You might want to check the Gardener's Watchdog to see what people's experiences have been. As for why Bluestone is only offering plants for Spring of 2012, that is odd. I assume they don't ship plants in the hot months, but I would think they would be shipping again in the Fall. Maybe it has to do with their changing over to the new pots. Terrene, I was thinking that too, that the smaller pots are more difficult to keep watered.

The replacement plant that I got for one of my dead plants from the sale was in a pot that had been torn off one of the three packs. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to plant it right away, and the poor thing dried out in the tiny pot and I think it's dead now. I don't plan on ordering much from Bluestone in the future - I've got a good local nursery where the plants are much larger and though they cost more they're in much better shape. I do like Bluestone's three packs but the weather did not cooperate with the sale this year.

I found it to be rare to receive all 3 good plants. However, I seldom wanted three plants. I too would never put a plant in the ground in its pot. Peat never worked for me either and if peat doesn't work, there's no way coir is going to work. What a waster of coir. I enjoyed returning their packaging for free postage on my next order. Without that option anymore, I won't be ordering from them either.

I ordered from Bluestone for years very happily, but the past two years my orders arrived looking terrible and barely alive. I've pretty much scratched them from my list of nurseries anyway.

You might want to email them about your back order. I received a spring order and two items were on back order. The packing slip said I had not been charged for the items, but I actually had been charged the full amount. I emailed them about this and was told my back order wouldn't be fulfilled and they sent me a check for the difference. Not sure if this was just my particular order or if something has gone on for their fall items. Maybe the transition to single pots has had some glitches. I did like the 3 pots, but I have a lot of area to fill in. Going to the single pots and higher pricing makes them no longer stand out as a good online bargain.

I was always told buy the smaller plants, they adjust better than the larger. That's what I've done for years and always had good luck.

I bought plants from them for the last two yrs, but only at their 50% off sale. I like the three pack. Since things look better in odd numbers and I want to avoid a little of this, a little of that, it is a good method. With perennials, I don't think the size matters too much-- they grow within a yr pretty well. Now, I ordered shrubs from Bluestone and would never do that again. Not that cheap and you wait forever for them to mature. What's the point? Hope they go back to the old way. All of my plants have arrived in great condition.
