 o
Mexican Petunia 'Purple Showers'?

Would anyone know where I can locate a photo showing a seed pod on the 'Mexican Petunia' plant? I'd like to know what to look for. If mine has set seed pods, they are there and gone within hours as I examine it daily.

I have planted a 5 gal pot of 'Mexican Petunia', the tall Purple flowered plant, but I've yet to see a seed pod. I purchased it at a local nursery about two months ago and can't remember if it was identified other than as 'Ruellia brittniana'. I am wondering if I have a seedless variety (I do hope so). It has only recently been transplanted into a bed, with heavy pine bark mulch, the only plant in this bed other than narrow bladed monkey grass and two large anchor shrubs. I was hoping it would be contained, being bordered by concrete walkways. Tip cuttings do root very easily. I've started a pot for the deck and they're already blooming.

For those who have the variety that produces seed pods, do you think I would have seen seed pods by now for my newly transplanted plant?

Can you tell by looking at the leaves on my plant if I have the original seed producing variety?

My thanks for your time and comments. ~Mary

Published Comments on the seedless variety 'Purple Showers': Mexican Petunia 'Purple Showers' - Ruellia brittoniana 'Purple Showers' (AKA R. twedia) is one of the toughest, showiest and most widely used Florida Friendly perennials. This cultivar does not produce seed and was found to be sterile by University of Florida research published in 2002 that was sponsored by the Department of Environmental Protection.

You can see pics here. It looks like on the right edge of your pic, just above the middle, is a finished flower. Individual flowers last only 1 day. If your plant is not sterile and it is outside, you should see a seed pod form there. Ruellia makes seed pods that burst open (explosive dehiscence.)
