Silver Mound Artemisia HELP!

HELP! My silver mound artemisia was getting leggy and appeared to be dead at the beginning of the stems so I just gave it a massive haircut. Will it regrow? My husband is going to kill me!

Hi, JayJay -- Yes, it will regrow. You couldn't keep it back if you tried! Artemisias are terribly invasive here in Missouri (ask me how I know!) and I feel you will see little shoots coming up soon.
Good luck -
Sunny

Sunny - I can't believe Silver Mound is invasive anywhere - it's a nice clumper. Are you sure you have a Silver Mound that is creeping?

But it does need regular haircuts to keep it from flopping open in the center. Every time mine gets to be more than 6" I cut them back by half.

Jayjay - yours will be back in no-time. If you keep it cut short, it'll be a much nicer looking plant.

Jay Jay,

I agree with "woodyoak". Silver Mound is not invasive as long as you tend it. It is a clumper as "woodyoak" said and does have a tendancy to flop this time of year. Another option which I do every two years or so is to divide it in the fall. I cut it right in two (after I have sheared it back) and cover with your winter protection and it will look great in the Spring.

I've never known the artemisia Schmidtiana 'Silver Mound' to be invasive - the divisions always make perfect mounds, but I've never gotten a "volunteer".

Several other artemisias ARE quite spready, but not silver mound.

I have wormwood and I would never plant it again, Its incredibly invasive.
I have silver mound and it has never been a problem. I cut mine back to keep it shaped.

Oh, so that's the answer. You are right, woodyoak and friends, the artemesia I have apparently isn't Silver Mound. Pity it isn't! I've been cussing it, cutting it, spraying it, digging it for forever and it just shows up again. Most prevalent under a huge holly tree where I have to be careful with eradication methods.
Best-
Sunny

Jay
Silver mound doesnt like to be in wet soil. it likes well drained (poor) sandy soil and full sun. Time to trim it is late spring. If the soil is wet the plant will turn brown. So if your soil is rich, add sand. avoid adding compost or anything that will hold moisture.

RE: Silver Mound Artemisia HELP!

Couple of questions concerning silver mounds..mine is in a pot(always, and not any where near the ground it was on a terrace.)and its getting cold here in Long Island, NY, so I brought it indoors, now Im seeing small bugs fall of the plant (I thought it was dust at first)...is that normal and what are they? Also can I prune back my silver mound in Nov., (I here spring is better to do that) but mine seems to be going grey and brittle likes it's dying or something and Im scared I have killed it because of the weather change and the cut down (temporarily) of constant sunlight it was used to getting. Please help!!!

RE: Silver Mound Artemisia HELP!

Silver mound is never invasive for me, though it is a rigorous grower (and I love it for that!). JayJay, you can cut your mounds to the ground and they'll always come back, so have no fear!

Talf, silver mound is an outdoor perennial, it probably won't take kindly to being indoors. It likely won't make the winter indoors in a pot. The bugs are probably some sort of mite and will kill your plant if not taken care of.
