That is a beauty. I'm rooting a cutting of a red Penstemon right now. It's been in water one week and already rooting. Penstemons are such wonderful plants and so easy to propagate.

I don't know anything about this particular penstemon (it's certainly very pretty), because penstemons in general do not like my heavy wet clay soil. I do grow a few in my raised "gravel" bed. While cold hardy for me, (check out the many varieties in the High Country catalog), they suffer from both spring & winter wet in my garden. So depending on your soil and growing conditions you might want to carefully consider where you plant it. Possibly raise it a bit or add gravel to the soil, etc.

Thank you echinaceamaniac for your idea of taking a cutting. I have never tried this and would appreciate advice on how this is done.

Leslie197, I appreciate your advice on the growing conditions of beard tongue. The garden soil is not clay and has peat moss added, etc., but I think I will add some gravel to be on the safe side and keep the crown raised. It sounds like they might like the same conditions as hyssop.

Jane - I just remove about a 4 inch cutting that doesn't have blooms on it. I removed the leaves at the bottom. I put in a glass of water with about 1 inch or 2 of water in the bottom. Put it near a sunny window and just put fresh water in the jar every couple of days. They usually root in 1-2 weeks. They are about as easy to root as coleus.
