a setback to my Philadelphus

after the harsh last 2 winters one of my 3 philadelphus trees is on its last legs.It is very large ,maybe 6 to 8 metres and now the foliage is only really noticeable when you get up quite close.
Is it worth hoping that it could recover or should I just take it down and replace it with something same or similar?

i would not wait to see if that will regenerate .. i would cut it down ....

if i were really patient ... and it was way out back.. where i did not have to look at it every day ... i might cut it to a few inches from the ground.. and see if it can make a go of it... from there ... i do consider my mock oranges as a 'run it over with the truck' plant ... meaning it can take a lot of abuse ... the up side of total cut down .. is that if there is some problem like disease.. you will be removing 99.99% of it ...

but i suspect its on its last legs ... but you never know ...

i have never seen a mock orange in the form of a tree ... you seem to be a couple decades behind on rejuvenation pruning.. lol ... unless this is some special mock orange that i am not aware of ...

best advice.. cut it down now.. and give it until mid fall to see how it reacts ... with its root base.. you might be surprised how aggressively it might come back ... [or die completely..lol]

thanks.Sounds like a good idea.I googled the plant and it seems they can grow to 30 feet (Philadelphus Maximus no less.)

Lucy - if there are any reasonable bits left you can take cuttings very easily. Just cut 1 foot lengths and stick them in the ground in an out of the way area. Forget them and check next spring. But it looks very old.

It also might not like those overbearing sycamores (for US readers Acer pseudoplatanus are 'sycamores' in the British Isles)

we arent confused about sycamores ... we are confused about planes.. lol ... are all planes sycamores..

and what all this nonsense about acer pseudoplatanus .. what exactly .. is a false [pseudo] planatus ... its either an acer [maple].. or a planatus.. it cant be a maple false plane.. whats that all about.. lol

that is my version of Seinfeld doing a standup bit on trees .. lol ...
