 o
Rudbeckia?

I received this plant in a trade this year and it has just started to bloom. It's definitely not what I expected. It was supposed to be R. Toto, which I have grown in the past. When I saw the buds swelling and could see the color, I thought it might be Rustic Toto. None of the pictures I've been able to find of Rustic Toto look like this. The size of the plant seems right and the leaves are correct, but I've never seen a flower like this one. I don't know what it is.

The plant is about 12 to 14 inches tall, and blooms are so full they remind me of a mum. I know there are lots of new varieties of Rudbeckia or Gloriosa Daisies on the market, but by doing google searches, I've not been able to find anything that looks like this. Can you help? Thanks,
Linda

Doesn't look like zinnia foliage to me.

It is one of the deeper red plants of the variety 'Cherokee Sunset', so yes, it is definitely a Rudbeckia. 'Cherokee Sunset' is actually a blended mix of colors, ranging from fairly yellow to deep brick red, with a lot of orange to rust tones in between, and the flowers are very, very double. Your particular individual plant happens to be on the deeper end of the color range for this mix.

Here is a link that might be useful: Catalog page at Thompson & Morgan

Perhaps Rudbeckia 'Cherokee Sunset'?

I pulled up pictures of Cherokee Sunset from the Park Seed Catalog right after I posted my question. Showed it to my DH who agreed that my NOT TOTO looked like one of the flowers in the picture on their site for Cherokee Sunset seeds. I'm headed now to look at the link that denninmi posted.

At least now I have a name for this plant. I guess I will have to save some seeds, if I want to assure that I can have it next year. It's a lovely plant and so much different than what I had expected to be getting from the trade. Too bad it's not a reliable perennial, but grown more as an annual.

You guys are good! Thank you all for your help. I appreciate it.

I don't know if it's straight cherokee sunset, it probably is but they're usually taller. 12-16 inches is more toto-ish..... but c. sunset is a variable strain.

Anyway it's real nice. The color, doubling and sturdy height are all excellent. I hope you leave a few seedheads to reseed in case it blooms itself to death.

I will definitely do that, kato_b. I'm quite impressed with it already. We've had awful, hot and dry weather here, and then got some really nice rain Thursday and some drizzle on Friday. The buds popped open and I was surprised when I drove the riding mower past them today. I had to stop and take a look since I did not expect the plant to be blooming and the flowers to look like they do. I love a nice surprise!
