Daffodil Bulbs Question

Posted by KendraSchmidt none (My Page) on

I just dug up the bulbs for daffodils that died to the ground recently. I'd like to relocate them at some point.

I'd like to know if I am supposed to divide the bulbs? If so, how? I read that I'm not supposed to divide the side shoots. Is this true? I've included pics of the bulbs in question below.

Also, I read that I'm supposed to leave them out in the sun for a week before storing them. Is this true?

And last, I'd like to know how long I can store them. Rather, when is it advisable that I put them in the ground again? I'd like to do it at the latest possible point possible without harming the bulbs.

Thank in advance for your feedback!

RE: Daffodil Bulbs Question

Back when I ordered bulbs, good sized ones often looked like yours with one or two 'babies' attached. And that's how I'd plant them. You'll get a flower stalk from the mother bulb and from both sides.

If you prefer a cluster look, plant them like they are. If you like to see individuals flowers not too close together, you can separate them but often the tiny bulbs only send up leaves for a season or two.

Maybe someone else can advise you on storing them. I know that's what you should do, but in 30+ years of growing daffodils, I've always dug them up in the spring with their leaves attached and replanted them right away.

RE: Daffodil Bulbs Question

The top photo shows a mother bulb (the right bulb) with a daughter bulb (the left bulb) large enough to be separated. The bottom photo shows two offset daughter bulbs (for lack of a better term) which are NOT large enough to separate. They would survive, but will do better left attached to the mother bulb for one more season.

How to divide -- just gently break them apart. They will almost always separate on their own if they're ready.

Leave in the sun? NO, NO, NO, they tunic on these bulbs isn't necessarily fully cured and thick enough. That is a recipe for severe sunburn that can lead to rot. That doesn't always happen, but it can, and it's just not worth the risk, IMHO. Leave them in a warm, dry, airy place out of bright direct light, spread out so that the air can flow between them.

The last possible date to plant them successfully is ... the day before your ground freezes for the winter. Or, if that doesn't happen where you live, I would say Thanksgiving is a good "last date" almost anywhere in the U.S.

Okay, I left it outside in the direct sun on the erroneous advice of ehow. Grrrr. Hopefully I didn't damage my bulbs. Thank you for your advice everyone, I really appreciate it.

RE: Daffodil Bulbs Question

a day or two in the sun is not going to matter..

the smaller you brake them up.. the smaller the show next year..

in theory.. they never have to be lifted ...

i seem to think.. that after a bit of drying.. i simply replanted them ... i am not sure you need to mess with storage until fall.. hopefully someone will chime in..

if you want to store them.. store them in a mesh potato sack.. hung in the garage ... thought this year.. somewhere a bit cooler would probably be better ... think of them as an onion.. or garlic.. as far as storing them .... i would hesitate in a basement.. but i dont have a reason for that .... perhaps too humid and mold concerns ...

RE: Daffodil Bulbs Question

If they are ready to separate, they will fall apart. Don't break them apart. Either replant them right away or wait until the ground is chilled. Here in TN where the ground doesn't freeze solid I can plant just about any time through January. I hang the bulbs in net bags with a fan on them to keep them cool (relatively--they're in the garage) and dry.
