"Becky" Shasta Daisy....So Impressive...????'s

Wow. I am so impressed with the Shasta Daisy "Becky". Wasn't all that impressed last year and the year before, but this third year it seems to have really taken off.

Does it divide and propagate well? What are some equally great companion plants for it?

Other comments welcome as well and would be appreciated.

It is an outstanding daisy isnt it 'jmc'?

(It is just now that my *4* stands of "Becky" are starting to bloom).

It is my understanding that Shasta Daisies need, occasional division to maintain its vigour.

Here is from last year in our garden..."Becky" with "Blue Paradise" Phlox:

Ooh! I like that phlox! How tall is it?

Including the flower it is a bit over 3 feet in height.

My 'Becky' grows under a river birch in partial shade. River birches are lovely trees but they have very dense surface roots (denser than maples!) that make planting almost impossible. The clump is over 3 feet wide despite have chunks taken out to try and keep her vigorous and blooms reliably every year. Even with the drought & heat last year and with no supplemental watering I did get a few blooms. This plant is definitely on my 'A' list.

Well, I like it because it usually survives our MN winters, something that not to many of the daisies do except of course old Marconi that likes to flop onto other things.

What I bought with this name is actually the only shasta daisy I have removed from my garden: it was too succesful, invading all neighbors (running habit).

My experience is like wieslaw's - nice plant for a few years and then it became a problem, spreading vigorously by both roots and seeding. Plus daises in need of deadheading are downright ugly :-) I'm still working on removing the last bits. It's certainly a much better daisy than anything else I tried but just too vigorous for what I want in the garden now. So keep an eye on its wandering ways....

I have yet to experience what you and wieslaw59 have described in terms of its spread. And I had read that as 'Becky' matured it would require division to maintain its vigour.

If my "Becky" takes over where I have planted it, then that will be a blessing for me. I've planted it in one of those difficult 'what do I put here' areas to 'keep from having to mow here.'

Either way, I'll be fine with it.

Pretty pic, rouge! Unfortunately for me, I have a horrible problem with oriental beetles. They decimate my daisies, including my Beckys, as well as daylilies and echinacea. The daylily damage isn't so bad, since they don't seem to attack the buds and the flowers are only here for one day, but on the other two plants the beetles attack the buds as well as the blooms, which as a result are always brown, eaten, and ratty. I would love to have the beautiful blooms in the photo above!

Thanks Dee. That is interesting about your problem with the beetles and "Becky". I too had problems with these insects last summer on my lily but no issues with it wanting "Becky".

Thanks for mentioning this. I am on the third year for my Shasta daisies. Two of the three died. The third one is ho-hum, and I wasn't sure if I wanted to keep it. I will give it a third year. :)
