Artemesia Silver Mound Not looking great

I planted artemesia silver mound last year and it performed well, looked good all season and began this spring, summer the same. However right now it is looking sloppy, parting in the center, some brown spots. It's been a difficult season (until last week!). Should I give them a haircut? When would I do that?
Thanks,
Nancy

Yes - give it a haircut now. You can cut it back pretty much as far as you want. You'll have sticks for a little while, but it's one plant that regenerates relatively fast and comes back into a nice albeit smaller non-floppy mound.

That's part of the problem with this plant.
It looks great in a nursery container and in the first year.

Subsequent years, after it has put its feet into the ground, it flops open in the center.

I did a good amount of research about this flop. One source suggested that perhaps the soil wasn't draining how the plant would want. Make sense since I have clay and silver plants typically prefer a course draining soil.

I plan to try something this year with mine:
Imagine a bullseye.... one circle in the middle, plus 1 outer ring.
I plan to cut back back the center down to about 4", while leaving the outer ring. I figure it won't look much different than now. Then, after the center fills back in, I'll cut back the outer ring.
I dunno if this will work or even be worth trimming it twice, but it can't hurt.

If I don't like it, I'm thinking next year, I'll put chicken wire (or hardware cloth) over it in spring, right as it's sprouting. Shouldn't be visible once it's fully leafed out. Then, as the season progresses, I'll raise the height of the chicken wire (using stakes of some sort) to support the growth.

Here is a link that might be useful: Silver Mound Thread

Thanks!! I'll try the haircut now. I'd love to hear how the bullseye technique works!

I've heard you have to divide them every yr. I have 3 but they are sort of mixed in with other plants in a messy way!

Maybe other varieties would not do this?
