After all this rain we've had the valerian went from standing perfectly straight to flopping. Now that the flowers are spent and new foliage and flowers are coming from the base I think I should deadhead it. I'm just wondering how far back I can cut it. It kinda got the hell beat out of it with some of these down pours and some of the foliage is looking kind of ratty looking, too. Just would like to freshen it up a bit. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks again!!!

IME you definitely want to deadhead it. In my garden it seeded so prolifically that I removed it in its second year and still pulled seedlings for 5 years. I love the scent and the umbels of flowers are great at the back of the border, but I am not fond of self-seeders since my deadheading isn't as prompt as it should be at times.

Cut the long stems to the base. They're done.
