Advice about trimming sick Clematis

margie5
10 years ago

We have two Clematis vines growing on a trellis together- an 'Ernest Markham' (Type C) and a 'Bee's Jubilee' (Type B1). Don't ask me to explain how they ended up together- a complicated story and unplanned, although they've looked lovely together for years. We have never trimmed them, but this year it looks like one or both may have a disease (possibly Clematis wilt). Some of the lower leaves are turning brown and the BJ barely bloomed. The EM bloomed less than it usually does with smaller flowers. Here's two photos of them in their glory:{{gwi:256978}}{{gwi:256979}}
And here they are this year:{{gwi:256980}}{{gwi:256981}}
I'd appreciate some input about how to trim these two so we can save them....and any advice about how to do that while they remain together would be nice (if that's possible). Thanks much.
