Advice about trimming sick Clematis

We have two Clematis vines growing on a trellis together- an 'Ernest Markham' (Type C) and a 'Bee's Jubilee' (Type B1). Don't ask me to explain how they ended up together- a complicated story and unplanned, although they've looked lovely together for years. We have never trimmed them, but this year it looks like one or both may have a disease (possibly Clematis wilt). Some of the lower leaves are turning brown and the BJ barely bloomed. The EM bloomed less than it usually does with smaller flowers. Here's two photos of them in their glory: photo IMG_2026.jpg photo IMG_2316.jpg
And here they are this year: photo IMG_4152.jpg photo IMG_4151.jpg
I'd appreciate some input about how to trim these two so we can save them....and any advice about how to do that while they remain together would be nice (if that's possible). Thanks much.

Although in a different zone, I prune both type two and three down to about a foot off the ground every year. Al

Thanks for the input. When do you typically do that? Just after flowering?

Pruning should be done in late winter/early spring, just as the new growth buds are beginning to form. In my area, that's around the first of March. However, there is not an issue of pruning now if the plants are ailing or the need arises. That will not necessarily reduce the need to prune again in spring......depends on how much new growth is generated this season after pruning.
