Soapwort ?

I bought a rock garden soapwort plant (Saponaria ocymoides) a year ago this past spring. It was on impulse, I don’t recall why, as with no flowers it is just plain green with ordinary leaves. I planted it to grow over some stone edging in a rock garden. Then when it bloomed this year I loved it: masses of soft pink single flowers. I was visiting the same distant nursery right after and bought 4 more. But then I thought I’d better check before planting them. The bloom period was shorter than I hoped, unless deadheading would have helped (which I didn’t do). When it’s not blooming it does not have much to offer: mat-forming, fairly non-descript. Now upon close examination I see seed pods forming on the one I planted last year. Are they heavy seeders? Too aggressive? If so, I’ll keep them out of my main bed.

They surely are (heavy seeders) and fairly rampant.

If I knew then what I know now, I wouldn't have planted soapwort in my rocks. I don't have enough sun to get many blooms, and it spreads like crazy going both ways. Down into the flower bed below, and up across the path above the rocks where it's viney growth likes to trip me. My neighbor wants some of it. I hope she won't be cursing me later on, lol.

I had one plant for several years and it never self seeded at all. I liked it in bloom and as an evergreen soft cushion on top of a retaining wall. But I like green and am not that bothered about short flowering periods.

I found soapwort to be a heavy seeder and aggressive. It is also one of those which doesn't pull up--it breaks off and just continues spreading.

I have planted soapwort as an edging plant in my herb garden, and I do deadhead it. I can easily lift it up and weed out any seeedlings I don't want. If I had a rock garden I think I wouldn't include it, as those rocks that are so pretty would make it harder to weed it out where I didn't want it. I think if I were planting it in an easily weeded place it would be okay, but you will have to decide for yourself.

Thanks! I will not plant it in my main bed then. I will keep it only where it can do what it wants, or where I can live with that. I’m glad I asked!
