I bought 2 Bleeding Heart(just the roots) in April(I do believe)from Walmart. I planted them in pots at first and watched them grow. They even got flowers on them over time, just this season, but they seemed to get too big for the pots. So I planted them in the ground in a shaded area. 1 plant seems to be doing good, leaves are turning yellow. But my other plant lost all its stems shortly after replanting them. It shows a little growth on it, but it only looks like little buds on the top. It has been like this for a few weeks now. Is this one going to be ok? Do I need to try moving it somewhere else? The area that they are planted are well shaded, well moist. One seems to be thrieving there, so the other should be too, right? I am just hoping that it was just shock from being planted somewhere else.

Bleeding heart (Dicentra spectabilis) will go dormant in the summer only to happily return next spring. Hopefully that is what is happening to yours. I just recently cleaned up the dead stems on mine.

they usually return.. IF YOU MARK THE SPOT.. so you dont disturb then.. forgetting there is a dormant plant in that spot ... been there.. done that.. too often .. ken

The deeper the shade the longer they hang around before going dormant. That you have had yours this long says it as great roots for next year!!

I've had really good luck with my Bleeding Hearts by cutting them WAY back after they're done blooming. I cut them back to the first or second node. This produces a spurt of second growth, and mine are still looking good in almost mid-August. Before I started doing this, they would get all yellow and die off by this time. It took a bit of courage the first time I tried it a couple of years ago, but it worked so well I've been doing it ever since.
