Giant Black Grasshoppers...Oh MY!

These giant grasshoppers love to feast on echinacea blooms at night! They are disgusting. They will just bite the blooms and disfigure them and then move on to their next victim. I have this beautiful burnt orange coneflower that is opening up now. Luckily I caught the jerk before he had his meal. He looked just like the one in this picture. The war continues...To be continued...

Seriously...I stomp these in the ground with my running shoes! How do you kill these? I'd spray them, but I'm afraid I'll kill the bees I depend on for pollination.

Looks like a cricket to me.
Wonder if there is a bait you could use?

I tried Semaspore grasshopper bait in the spring, but it is supposed to be used when the grasshoppers are 1/4" - 1/2" long to be effective, so it's too late to use it now. Unfortunately, I did not see any decrease in the grasshopper population. There numbers are astounding here!

Planet Natural also carries a product for immediate control, but it is not approved for organic use, so I have not tried it yet. It does say it has little or no effect on beneficial insects, so it might be worth a try.

I never knew crickets ate flowers. I don't see as many around my place as I used to or hear them singing either. Maybe it's early in the season tho. Heck, I've had them in my house; and I just leave them be. Sometimes their loud song from the corner of the room startles me.
But, I've read where they can do alot of damage to cloth and furniture indoors? Is it the same species of cricket that does that? Now I'll have to do research.

That is not a cricket. It is, indeed, a grasshopper.

Looks like something out of a horror movie, lol. It should be up there with Mothra!

I haven't seen any black grasshoppers, (yet) but there have been an amazing number of regular green ones, unfortunately. I've never seen so many in my yard. I hope they're not big breeders!
