What to do with spent Hollyhocks?

I have company coming this week end and my Hollyhocks look awful! I can see why some folks don't like them. They were beautiful when they were in bloom. Can I cut the stalks down? The leaves at the bottom are fine. I believe I left them up last year and they did not seed themselves anyway. Only 1 of the five bloomed last year but this year they all bloomed. Help!!!

If you have more seed pods than blooms, cut the stalks down. Really dry and brown seed pods can be plucked off, opened and their contents sprinkled around on the ground in hopes of seedlings that may sprout yet this year or at least next year.
If the seed pods are still green and tight, leave them on the stalks you cut off and put the stalk somewhere to dry.
