| The mums you guys helped me winter over all survived! I even multiplied them (they will be a little less bushy because I cut them WAY back to make more) I even pinched them back correctly! |
Follow-Up Postings:
| Glad they survived and you were able to make new plants. That area will look lovely in bloom. Are there any buds on the plants yet? How big are the mature plants? They might be spaced a little too closely. This late in the season I would wait until spring if they need to moved. |
| Nice looking mums. . . I was going to comment on the spacing too. I don't know if its common, but I have 2 that are too close together and the sides that touch are flat, no foliage. They will be separated come spring. |
| What might have helped them overwinter is proximity to that brick wall (especially if it's a southern exposure). It's important to give mums maximal time to establish before cold weather, which usually means planting in spring. Late summer/fall-planted mums that aren't showing new growth at the base should be considered annuals in cold climates. Odds are, they won't return the following spring. |
| Nice work! What was the original source of your plants? Did you buy fall potted mums or were these divisions from existing plants in your garden? In my zone 6 garden I see about a 33.3% survival rate for fall planted potted mums. A few have grown to be monsters, but most just survive as small plants. The fancier the bloom, the less likely their survival. Last spring I ordered hardy mums from Faribault Growers in Minnesota. The plants have grown well, but the story can't be told until next spring. |

| Sorry! I had a really busy week! I got my mums from tons of places (food city-walmart-lows-the nursery) I know they are spaced super close together and I will space them out next spring. The size of them is probably about the size of a medium dinner plate. They are now racked with buds btw...did I miss any questions? |

| You think yours are close together, come check out mine! I planted probably 10 different mums together in a circle. I thought I'd left enough space in between them and now I've learned to space them alot more next time. They grew huge! I had no idea. Yours look great! |
