| The spring before last we planted three echinops in a new section of border garden. We love how they have grown but they're a bit lonely. We would like to intermingle another thistle of similar or shorter height to help fill the space. What are favorite thistles?
Also we are open to other suggestions. What are good looking perennials to pair with echinops? We would appreciate any suggestions people have.

I assume you are talking about Echinops bannaticus?? You can try Echinops ritro ssp. ruthenicus,it is lower and bluer. You need to find some sturdy specimens, not all are selfsupporting. Echinops ritro Veitch's blue is more intens darker blue. All echinops are afraid of 'wet feet' in the winter and are not always long-lived. Good companionship for echinops are dark red heleniums like Waldhorn and alike, Helianthus Lemon Queen, Helianthus decapetalus Plenus, pink Phloxes, Helenium Flammenrad, Rudbeckia laciniata Starcadia Razzle Dazzle, and others

Hi Sorry to be so broad, we have echinops bannaticus, called 'blue glow' Any ideas about thistle?

Echinops is called Globe thistle. What other kind of 'thistle' do you have in mind? There is a plant called Cirsium rivulare Atropurpureum - brook thistle, but it is a meadow plant needing more moisture to thrive.Cirsium japonicum is biennial. There is one Cirsium more which name I don't remember at the moment. Another type is Carlina acaulis-stemless carline thistle. It grows naturally in mountains in Europe. There is also Berkheya purpurea from South Africa.

Eryngium is a Thistle-like plant you might wish to consider.
