what is eating my desdemona ligularia?PIX

We planted a couple of ligularia dentata 'Desdemona" under a tree where they get only filtered light and the soil stays damp. They both have some holes in the leaves, but this bottom one is looking worse. Since this photo was taken, more and larger holes are appearing and the bottom one has one leaf that is completely drooping and wilting with numerous large holes in it. Can I do anything to stop this damage?

My guess it's either slugs or snails, you might catch them at it if you go out after dark with a flashlight. My Ligulara used to look like yours but has had minimal damage since I put a collar of copper mesh around it early in the year before the new growth started.

I'm not guessing, I know : slugs. All ligularias are like caviar to slugs; they can also bury themselves in the soil, eating the crown and big roots.

I just got rid of my ligularia because of the slugs. They are a real slug magnet.

You could just buy a pair of Muscovy ducks. They love to eat slugs.

Hey, thanks everyone. As of today it looks like the slugs have been doing a real number on my ligularia. My husband went to Lowe's and got some slug bait and spread it all over. Apparently he hadn't noticed how they were also enjoying other parts of yard, so he was glad to get the wake up call. We have had a lot of cool rainy weather lately, weather that slugs love, so that has to have been a factor in this. From the way our two plants look today, I am not sure one will make it. We'll just have to see how they overwinter and do next year.
