| Granted, much of the country is experiencing major drought and high temps, but every year several/many of my Clems get ragged looking by mid summer. From the ground up to 3 or 4 ft, there are bare legs and brown leaves. Many times, several stems brown out and die completely, only to send out new growth through the tatters. All this with regular watering!
Looking good right now are: Betty Corning
Most others are an embarrassment. The spring show is no longer making up for these ugly summer characteristics. Would like to hear from others. What looks good from year to year in high summer heat??? |

| My advice is: keep only the viticella types, which are more resistant to the clematis wilt, and others which can be cut to the ground in the spring. Throw the rest away.I did it. |

| My HF Young looks good (type 2) and my texensis hybrids like Gravetye Beauty and Princess Diana. I have several of the little bells that are type 3 pruning, both species like pitcheri, crispa, and viorna and the hybrids like Fascination and they all look fine My integrifolias all look good: Durandii, alba, Arabella, etc. Mrs Robert Brydon (non vining) is in great shape with healthy foliage and buds just beginning to open, but you need a lot of room for her. My alpina and macropetalas look good, particularly 'Stolwijk Gold' which has gold to chartreuse foliage and very pretty seedheads when the springtime blue flowers have faded. You might want to post this on the clematis forum as well. |
