Phlox panniculata-can it be moved now?

Posted by Spicebush none (My Page) on

I have several pretty Phlox pan. seedlings that I want to transplant before I thin the magenta herd. I've tried labeling and flagging them to move in spring but the labels always blow away or disintegrate. Can I move them now while they're in bloom, without killing them?

Thanks for any advice.

i would tend to wait until sept.. when cooler nights are much more reliable .... and the chance of hundred degree days is mostly gone ...

Oops! Sorry! I'm in SW Virgina, zone 6. Our temps are in the 70s during the day and upper 40s to lower 50s at night right now.

They should survive with those temperatures. It might not be a pretty sight, but I'm a big fan of doing things when it works for you and not worrying too much about the perfect time.

Ideally you'll have a couple days of wilting and dropping of flowers and then things will be fine after that.

Phlox is really tough as long as you get good roots...easy to do since they have thick, but shallow roots.

That sounds good! I think I'll just do it. Most of the seedlings are magenta but there are several that are really pink and so pretty.

Thanks to everyone for the advice!
