Montreal is probably one of the best gardening cities I have ever been to. The botanical gardens are incredible, and there seem to be interesting gardens in every park, nook and cranny and container in that city.

I think those pictures are perhaps images from the Mosaiculture exhibitions from 2000/2001/2003, not images from a current garden.... (although there may be some of those things in various gardens - I've seen something similar in other civic gardens near here, especially in Christmas displays.)

You're right, woodyoak.

I went in 2000 and 2001, but was busy moving in 2003. It was awesome and I so wish that it would be a permanent or annual exhibit.

I have not been to Montreal but I've been to Victoria and Vancouver BC Canada and they are both outstanding gardening cities. Flowers everywhere.

There is a Gardening in Canada forum but it's not very active. I went to university in Montreal in the 1970s and my husband grew up there. Montreal is a great city with lots of things to see and do, horticultural and otherwise. The Montreal Botanical garden is a must, as is the park on Ile Ste Helene ttp://www.parcjeandrapeau.com/ which is where the Floralies gardens are located - a legacy of the 1980 Floralies Internationales horticultural fair. And you have to see park at Mount Royal http://www.tourisme-montreal.org/What-To-Do/Attractions/mount-royal-pa rk

There are beautiful old churches that rival European ones, beautiful architecture particularly in the older areas, lots of interesting museums and art galleries, fabulous shopping and dining, and endless things to see and do. The city is easy to get around on the subway (the Metro) http://www.stm.info/english/metro/a-index.htm

You wouldn't be disappointed by a visit to Montreal!

It just ocurred to me... You said you're planning to visit in Sept. or Oct.? You need to be aware that the first frost date in Montreal is usually by the end of the first week of October. Any garden display based on annuals will be 'toast' by then! But fall color is usually good in parks with a lot of trees (e.g. Mount Royal).

Woodyoak - thank you for posting that info! Going to Montreal in August, have never been there. Will check out links. Still have to book hotel - any recs?

Have housesitter arranged - hopefully she will remember to water my flowers so *they* don't become toast...

The classic place to stay is the Queen Elizabeth Hotel. The main train station is underneath it and it is a stop on the Metro (subway). It puts you in the heart of downtown close to shopping, dining, and everything you could need. The beautiful Marie Reine du Monde (Mary Queen of the World) cathedral is just down the street. It's a must-see place. The Chateau Chaplain http://www.montrealchateauchamplain.com/
is another good hotel in the same area. It is also on the subway line. Montreal has an extensive 'underground city' with lots of shopping (very handy in their cold winters!) and most major tourist sites are easily accessible from the Metro, so a hotel on a Metro line is important.

Check out Vieux Montreal (Old Montreal) for great dining, wonderful old buildings and interesting shopping. http://www.vieux.montreal.qc.ca/eng/accueila.htm

Enjoy your trip - it's a wonderful city!

Thank you! I took a quick peek at the rates, and it's reasonable, so I'll sit down when I have some quiet time this weekend and book hotel/plan trip. :0)

I've been to BC about a dozen times but sure would love to see more of Canada.

I dream of taking the train trip from Vancouver to Toronto.

Marquest, you need to go :)
