Taller Thalictrum

It is that time of the season when these plants show their worth.

Up till now one may have carefully staked these tall but slender plants and hopefully they haven't encountered hail or extra heavy rains and wind.

Here is one of our "Splendide" in full sun as of today:

Here is another in the back which gets dappled:

(each of the above plants are well over 8 feet in height including flowers)

and here is a "Hewitt's Double" which has grown up into a "Lilac".

I would love to see pictures of your now blooming tall Thalictrum.

They are fabulous, Rouge. I love thalictrums and look forward to indulging myself in the woods. Do you have the white T.delavayii?

RE: Taller Thalictrum

Thanks 'camp'. For sure these impressive perennials can find a place in your wonderful allotment.

I have never found white T.delavayi in my neck of the woods and I have looked lots.

I am also very interested in "Splendide WHITE".

Here is a link that might be useful: Splendide WHITE

I've just ordered 'T. Black Stockings' a taller Thalictrum, lavender purple flowers with jet black stems. I've only seen pictures of this one so I'm hoping it turns out as nice as the descriptions say it is.

Beautiful. I only have white ones.

I will get some seeds from my son, Rouge - he has a huge clump of the T.delavayii album - will happily send you some (easy from seeds)
Will pm you when ready

The same Splendide 10 days later. Not many more flowers in that time but each little pink 'ball' is much more open giving a significantly fuller look.

(Assuming no stormy weather the flower show will peak in early September.)

Quite impressive, they're not as impressive (but they do live and bloom) here in the South or maybe I'm not a good thalictrum grower (either is possible).

When I was out cleaning up under some Rhodos I found I still have a piece of Thalictrum flavum, I thought I'd lost it. Another tall one with lemon yellow flowers and blue green foliage, nice as a background plant. I'll be moving it to a better location in the fall.

UPDATE:

Approaching one month after the first picture post of "Splendide". These tiny flowers are quite sturdy as while in bloom this plant has seen several very hard rainstorms.

RE: Taller Thalictrum

Thanks for the update. Very nice plant you have there.

Wow, beautiful! And looks like a long-blooming plant.

Rouge THAT is a real stunner.

Thanks everyone. It is one of our prized plants. Given its winter hardiness I should be more readily available for more to enjoy.

rouge, do your Splendide leaves ever turn yellow before autumn? mine do, and i can't figure out why... wish mine looked as wonderful as yours! i love this plant.

Absolutely amazing!

roxanna, I gave my sister a "Splendide" last fall. It arose very healthy in the spring and is quite tall but she complains that so much of the foliage is yellowed. I have 2 "Splendides" with very minor yellowing of some lower stems and leaves.

RE: Taller Thalictrum

rouge -- glad to know it's not just my "Splendide"! i love it so much that i bought 3 more this year when my local nursery offered it for the first time(woo-hoo!!). all are doing well, tho not as tall yet as the original, but all are doing the yellowing on the lower leaves. guess i should try to figure out why -- nutrient deficiency perhaps?

 o
RE: Taller Thalictrum

I am impressed that your local nursery has stocked it. Lucky you.

(I do apply lots of compost throughout the season to the base of the plant.)
