For arbo, the garden room.

My garden room such as it is (nothing fancy) came about because I wanted a koi pool with a little spillway. The only place available to dig one was against our back fence in the corner near an ornamental cherry tree. First we built a U shaped planter so I could have my little spillway, knowing we'd have a leaf problem in the fall it needed to have a roof over it, so, that was also done before we dug the pool (beginning to sound like " Mr Blandings Builds His Dream House'?) LOL.

The koi pool isn't that big so we built a small deck in front of it, sightly overhanging the edge, it gives the illusion the pool is bigger than it actually is.
The only 'discussion' we had was the placement of the rock around the spillway, I didn't quite like the angle some of the rocks were in, needless to say I ended up finishing it myself LOL.

Once that was built I thought why don't we lattice in the rest of it, I thought enclosing it in will make it look more like a room. Not shown in these pictures is the lattice we put up covering the fence, left hand side last year (first picture).

Coming up a gravel path you can see the spillway through a doorway, lattice walls on both sides. Eventually these will be covered with vines or maybe Actinidia kolomikta.
The whole thing inside the lattice walls is approximately 15'X20' give or take an inch or two. The deck goes along the whole length and is approx. 6' wide, wide enough for a small table and a couple of chairs. This is where I grow a few things that wouldn't make it outside, like the Daphne odora 'Aureo-marginata' in the right hand corner of the planter.
Things have matured a little bit since the pictures were taken but things are pretty much the same.

First picture left hand side, more to follow.

how fun! i'm guessing mosquitoes are not an issue there? or you would have screen-enclosed it? Well, you certainly have figured a design to keep the herons away-- no skydiving for them into YOUR pond!

we have lost numerous sets of koi- small ones- to what we guess were herons and/or raccoons, so we haven't added any in recent years...sigh. Yours are beautiful.

No heron problems but we had trouble with either a mink or otter year before last, we had to cover the pool with netting. Mosquitoes on summer evenings usually drive me indoors, none in the pool though, the fish make short work of them.
Roof is made of clear fibreglass panels, the right side of the planter is sunnier than the left, it can get quite hot in there during the day but by four the sun has passed over and it's quite comfortable.

I always enjoy seeing photos of your "pool room", Annette. Glad to read about the steps used to bring it into fruition. Sounds like the perfect place to read and enjoy a snack/drink during the late afternoon early evening.

Edited to add:
I had thought that it was attached to your house. How far away from the house is this area?

Bobbie, it's about 50' from the back of the house, straight across from the first picture in my 'gardening with invasive....' thread on Cottage.

I also love seeing your pool room! This tine, I am going to clip your instructions, Annette! Maybe I will eventually get around to making a similar one here some day!
