(Just posted this on the geranium board, but I think that may be more about zonal geraniums...) Hi, I am new here and new to hardy geraniums, and I live in 7a in virginia. Rozanne, planted at the same time, is healthy but exceedingly leggy. I've cut it back, but was wondering if it might become better behaved next year once it is more established. I know it us rangy by nature, but this us ridiculous. Had to fashion a wire collar to get it if the ground! Maybe too much shade. It only gets about 3 hours if direct sun. Otherwise bright shade. Macrorhizum just went in under a crepe myrtle and looks happy. Hopefully it will do battle and survive the dry shade. Please... One out of three! Phaeum is next. Can you even grow these things in central VA??? Cheers!

Sorry I can't offer any help with your G. 'Biokovo.' I have two or three of them planted in a part shade bed and all are healthy, robust and bloomed well earlier in the growing season. Mine are well-established plants that have been in the ground a number of years. It could be some sort of fungus but it sounds to me as though the plant isn't happy where it's planted. Potting it up again when it's already distressed probably isn't a good idea. I hope some folks more knowledgeable will have some suggestions for you. Rosanne is a different sort of perennial geranium. When I first planted it, I was annoyed watching as it spread out and climbed through other perennials. I've since learned that is its nature and I no longer frown at it. Nothing else in my garden blooms right up until frost. It hasn't harmed any of my other perennials over the years so I just let it do its thing. I've cut it back, but was wondering if it might become better behaved next year once it is more established. If my experience is anything to go by, I'd guess it won't. Mine is growing in full sun however so perhaps someone growing it in more shade will have a different experience.

I don't have a biokova either, but it sounds like its just the old foliage dying off with new basal growth coming up. Just trim off the ugly stuff and it should be just fine. Rozanne is one of my favorites. It is a sprawler yes..but blooms all summer long. Mine are in part shade and do very well. It takes a couple, few seasons for it to fill out and look its best. If you are expecting it to grow upright/off the ground, sorry it's a ground sprawler... Also not sure if you are aware, but it takes 3years for perennials to look their best/mature. 1. Sleep 2. creep 3. and leap! Gardening requires patience ;0)

IME x biokovo thrive in warm, rather dry and well draining soil. I watched batches of them thriving in a neglected planting, using mineral soil like for green roof. They grew compact and tidy. some in my own garden sometimes lose leaves in a dry period. The stem turning black sounds not so good though. Where did you place yours, what was the potting medium like? good luck, bye, Lin

Re G. 'Rozanne'. People would be a lot happier with this plant if they understood that it's a twiner, and in fact looks its best twining into neighbors. I can't think of another plant that behaves that way without overwhelming neighbors, and seeing the blue flowers apparently coming from a shrub or another type of perennial is part of the charm.
