I am planning to order a quantity of just one red astilbe. I want RED/DARK RED, not cherry red, etc. I have grown Montgomery and Red Sentinel (both have a red i love, and a good size for me) but now there is Radius, and others. What are your thoughts? Thx much.

'arbo', I have a "Visions in Red" that I think is the color you describe. I don't think I have a picture from this season. The flower stalks from this Astilbe are, for lack of a better word, stiff or bristly...kind of like a arts and crafts pipe cleaner. Here is another Astilbe I can show you from this season (I don't know the variety but I think I could dig it out). But it is likely too pink for you? I really like it as the flowers and flower stalks are 'softer' more delicate than "Visions in Red". (This one is located in tons of shade).

Mindy, IMO it's pretty hard to beat 'Fanal'. Red is always a bit tricky - most will have a cherry pinkish cast to them but this is more or less a deep scarlet color. And an old, 'tried and true' variety.
