Wind in its "hair"

I would like to plant Hakonechloa macra "All Gold" (Japanese Forest Grass) next to our residential AC unit.

This may seem like a goofy question but with the AC on for often much of the day in the summer I am wondering if this this significant 'constant' flow of air on the plant negatively impacts on its health? Does it affect its growth?

Well, constant, flowing air would have a drying affect. That's not a good thing.

I don't have a central AC unit, but I think I've always heard you should keep vegetation away from the unit because it blocks air flow. Not sure how close you wanted to plant it though.

Right Kevin, I do know that one is to keep the unit relatively open but this grass is pretty low-lying so I think it should not interfere with the operation of the AC. And many/most grasses are able thrive in dry conditions so I am hoping that such a drying air flow might now be an issue....not sure though.

presuming absolutely no air movement restrictions due to such ...

then its a 'plant it and find out' situation ...

if it looks crumby.. move it next fall ...

Yup Ken....that is what I shall do.

(But yikes that "All Gold" grass is expensive. I got a nice big one today but it was $20)

Does the A/C unit blow out hot air? I would tend to think twice if that is the case. Can you divide the big one and only plant half in front of the unit and if it does well over a full season move the other half over?

In my experience, the hakone grasses don't appreciate dry conditions, I would plan on giving it supplemental water.

What I have there right now is a Persicaria "Painters Palette". It did just fine in this location although I do know it is a very hardy tough plant. But given the other plants down this same side of the house it just didn't look right with its very bold colours and it was too tall. And so I was thinking that the "All Gold" would look better as there is another "All Gold" on the other side of the path....so a bit of symmetry. As Ken said it is only an experiment...no big deal. I will report back next summer!

Gosh, I don't know about hakone, but I do have a huge clump of "Porcupine" grass right smack in front of the AC unit and it is stupendous, the AC unit doesn't affect it a bit. :0)
