| Do you find that columbine sometimes die to the ground but return the following spring? For example, I planted 3 Bluestone columbines this spring and two of the died to the ground while the other flourished.
The surprising thing was the two in more shade (part sun) died to the ground while the one in a bit more sun is going strong. Considering our extreme temperatures this year.... |

died to the ground... ???? as in dead as a doornail or is there a floret down near the bottom.. in which case.. i guess they are not dead ... mine are usually so decimated by leaf miners.. that there isnt much left to die back to the floret... lol ... ken

As in to the ground. As in the way Dicentra sometimes die to the ground in summer and return in spring.

I would not be surprised at all if they go dormant during extreme summers. I only have A. canadensis and there's nary a sign of much/any foliage at the moment, but I know they'll be back next spring.

Where I live, that's perfectly normal behavior for Columbine.

They die down for me here in Oregon but they do look ratty right now.

Some of mine, the ones in heavier shade, have a few leaves, the rest have died to the ground - as they do every year - and will return next spring healthy as ever.

Some of mine died back or were cut back earlier in the summer and have produced lush new growth, others have not had any regrowth. I guess I'll find out in the spring whether they made it our not. Totally Confused

Like coolplantsguy, I only have A. Canadensis - they just grow wild here and come up in the most surprising places. Only thing different is mine died back and disappeared a while after blooming but all have since put out new foliage.

Some of mine have not put out new foliage. I guess I will wait until spring to see if they reappear!

I meant that they DON'T die down for me

Back in late July, I pulled off my seeds off my columbines plants, cut them back to the ground and they have grown back with nice, green lush plants. In fact, I have one blooming now. This is normal for the columbines..they will return and sometimes where you never planted them.

Columbines are susceptible to some sort of cown rot for me. They do like good drainage, but even in some good locations they just don't like it and die. If the foliage started drooping or looking yellow before they disappeared you too could have this problem. Because of leaf miners and spider mites I always must cut my survivors back to the crown by mid-May to the first of June. A few new leaves will pop up and if we are lucky not to have the inferno set in by then (which isn't often) a whole new bit of lush growth may come. This new lush growth is then again assaulted by "bugs" and then I must cut it down once more. By now the heat is upon us so the foliage that comes up the 3rd time is pretty whimpy by comparison to spring. All is not lost however, as by next spring it comes back in full force ready to start the cycle of growth/insects/cutting back/ again. Also, some Columbine cultivars are more adapted to the hot/humid south then others. You may want to look into that if the ones you are selecting seem to be struggling with the summer heat.

I try not to worry about the leaf miners. Unsightly but okay. I have some that have been around for three years (aren't columbine a short lived perennial?) and others that vanished in year one. I don't think the two that vanished this year will return as they have not produced any new leaves. The really strange part is the one in more sun lived.

I'm not ctnchpr, but his DW, commandeering his user name. We are currently landscaping our deeply wooded yard. I purchased some columbines last wk at a half price sale and all appeared to be healthy and thriving. While completing the bed where they are to go, several of them have begun to yellow and droop. Our weather has been unusually hot and humid for June, but I have them in the shade and am keeping them watered. Do I need to return these plants or are they just going dormant due to the heat? Thanks
