Hibiscus Disco Belle - move now or wait?

This past spring I moved a few of these from my parents garden to mine, so they've only been in their current spot 1 season and aren't terribly large. I want to move them again, but have never done this in the fall before. Can I safely do it now or would it be better to wait until spring? They've pretty much finished blooming.

I've rarely moved any, and only in spring. If you have more than one clump, it might be worth trying to move some now and some in the spring - to spread the risk of failure.... :-)

You run a risk of moving them twice in the same season so caution suggests waiting until they've been in place for a season unless there's no other alternative. Weigh that against the fact they're likely in the process of going dormant now that the soil is cooling and the hours of daylight are shortening.

Personally I'd wait until spring since they're late-season bloomers and would benefit from the entire early-mid growing season to acclimate to their new location unless there's a compelling reason to move them now. I guess I'd weigh the risks of losing them against the benefits of moving them. Personally I'd choose the former rather than the latter but each gardener makes choices that satisfy his/her own priorities.

Best of luck Kevin!

Thanks.

There's no pressing reason to move them now, so I can wait until spring. Right now I'm in this "get as much done now as possible" mood, but I can hold off on these.

I don't see the harm in moving them now - you just moved them this season, so they're not settled in yet, you won't be doing much, if any, in the way of additional root damage if you dig them now. Fall is a great time to move plants, and it's only mid-September, plenty of time to let them grow roots in the nice warm soil. Hibiscus are fairly tough plants. I still have to replant mine, which have been in garbage bags out of the ground about a month due to the patio re-build. I expect them to be fine next season. :0)

If you start some from seed where you want them to be, very often they will bloom the first year.
