A little surprise!

I planted the Coral Mammoth Mum in the foreground Spring 2011. This year I spotted a seedling in front of the momma.

At least that is what I though but the size and color of the flower are dramatically different.

Is it typically for a seedling to be that different?

It's very common for seedlings to be different. That is beautiful though!

They're both beautiful. It will be interesting to see if the baby has any of the growth characteristics of the momma. I love the Mammoth mum series! I have both the red and coral and they have been outstanding for me. Next year I'm adding more for sure.

Now I wish I hadn't pulled out all those mum seedlings I found this past spring. Rats!

Thanks! Wasn't sure if it was common for this to happen or not.

They get huge fast! It must be the perspective but that Coral one shown above is almost 4' wide.

The red is fading a bit on this one, but still nice!

They are both very pretty! I will have to look out for those mammoth mums.

Yes in my experience seedlings can have a lot of genetic variation - just like kids can from their parents and siblings. It makes things interesting, although if you're looking for more uniformity then clones work better.
