Hi all, I have some nitrogen deficient plants that are doing poorly and have not had any new bottom growth since their initial growth in spring. They flowered well, but most of the season had yellowish/purple leaves. Should I wait until spring to feed them/amend soil, and hope for the best, or should I do it now? Thank you!

That actually sounds like it could be a potassium deficiency. To be sure, get a soil test done. You don't want to overdo nitrogen now and promote exuberant, succulent new growth that will be susceptible to severe frost damage. At most, you could mix a little slow-release balanced fertilizer into the soil so the plant puts on a bit of growth during cool early fall weather.

hey jude... its fall .. they are supposed to look ratty by this time ... and yellowing is one of the key things on the rattiness scale ... lol .. its hard for me.. to agree with your initial premise.. that yellowing plants in fall are proof of nitro deficiency .... i would NEVER fert in fall with high nitro .. for fear of making plants that are supposed to be going dormant.. go into active growth phase ... which can lead to all kinds of problems... when they dont hardening off for winter properly ... [in my z5] without a picture.. its impossible to tell you whats going on .. yellowing leaves .... on un-named plants.. is really not a lot of info .. upon which to give any pertinent advice.. IMHO ... all that said.. putting a layer of compost on your beds.. would not be a bad idea... as it would take all winter.. to work its way in ... so if you cant post pics.. get the soil test done.. that eric suggests ... no guessing ... no presumptions ... ken

Hi Ken, Thanks for your advice. Just trying to "take a sad song and make it better." I haven't named my blue fortune hyssops. LOL! Judy

Agastache foeniculum 'Blue Fortune' tends to be a shortlived perennial at best--4 years is about the limit. How old are yours?
|
They are in their 4th year. Thanks for the information! I like their size and look and smell, and they are my biggest bee attractor. I will look for more; however, do you have suggestions for a similar plant in relation to the previous information? Part to full sun, clayish soil.
