Iris Blooming NOW!?

I put in three iris plants this spring after most irises had finished blooming. I bought them from our local garden center in medium sized pots with all their leaves showing. I never would have believed it, but now in September one of the three has three flower stalks, one open flower and plenty of buds on the third stalk. Is this usual for iris? We have had a cooler than normal August. I'm in Zone 7. Most importantly, will this plant to bloom again in the spring?

See my post on a similar issue...! I would expect your iris to bloom as normal next year.

Are you sure you didn't buy some of the re-blooming type iris? I guess they bloom both in spring and fall, but I've never grown them.

I had an iris send out a stalk last year during a warm spell late in the fall, after being divided a few weeks prior. The snow came faster than it was able to bloom, but it did bloom normally once spring came (more abundant blooms than avg actually). So, yours will probably be fine. It sounds like they're happy with where you've planted them.

Occasionally an iris (not a reblooming variety) will put out a fall bloom. They will still bloom next spring.

Do you have the tags from the iris? As Kevin says, it could be a rebloomer. I have some dwarf iris that have bloomed in November (in CT!) for me.

Tall Bearded Iris Sugar Blues is reblooming for me right now - one stalk is almost done and two more are up and should bloom next week. Intermediate Bearded Lo Ho Silver has also been blooming for a week or more. A noid rebloomer, an apricot tall bearded, is reblooming as well right now, and one of my Standard Dwarf Rebloomers What Again, put out a rebloom scape a month ago and then another 2 weeks later. It's early for rebloom season here, so I probably will find more of my rebloomers sending up flowers before we get frost in mid to late October. I expect rebloom from my rebloomers every fall and most years they do not disappoint.

summerstar, at least one of your iris plants is most likely a rebloomer. Did you have tags of their names in the pots? If not, just enjoy it and you probably will get flowers again in the Spring. Reblooming or Remontant Irises rebloom on new growth that occurs during the growing season so they need more water and can use some extra food to help stimulate that growth. Not all rebloomers will rebloom in all zones. Some take longer to cycle to rebloom and by the time they may be ready to rebloom, the weather may have gotten too cold for the plants to continue their growth cycle. I have some charts that I've found on line that tell you which rebloomers are LIKELY to rebloom up to which zones. But there is never a guarantee as to if you will get rebloom from reliable rebloomers even for your zone. It's just a bonus you may get, which is especially nice with many of the perennials and annuals shutting down for the year. The extra color is nice when all the mums and asters are in bloom.

Several of you have asked about the variety of Iris that I have and that they may be a rebloomer. Well, all three are German Bearded iris and no mention is made on the tags of reblooming. I planted two 'Halston' which is a deep purple-violet and just one of these bloomed this week. The tags state that these irises bloom in the summer. I guess I forgot that and assumed they bloom in the spring. The third is a German Bearded called 'Strawberry Love'. I planted it between the two purples. I'm assuming the fall bloom is due to the weather. They're very pretty and only grow 18-24 inches. I will give them an extra feeding before cold weather hits. I've learned something about odd weather patterns and reblooming. Thanks everyone.

I hope I don't confuse you, summerstar. Just because the tag did not mention that one or both of your irises is a rebloomer does not mean anything.

German seems to be just another name for a "bearded" iris.

I just did a little on line research for you. BOTH of your irises are Intermediate Bearded Irises meaning that they are shorter then the Tall Bearded Irises. They should top out at about 20 to 22 inches tall. In the spring, they may also bloom a bit earlier than their taller cousins and after the dwarf varieties. I grow all three kinds.

Halston is listed as a rebloomer so you should see it rebloom in the fall if the growing conditions are right. I don't think the weather has much to do with it, only that Halston has the genes to rebloom and has produced enough growth to rebloom.

Strawberry Love is not a reblooming iris.

Hope this is some help to you,
Linda
