Interesting peony root nodules

Good grief!! It took me forever and a day to login to this blasted forum. Looks like I finally did it.

Anyway.........

I was digging and dividing peonies today - one of which was a "fern-leaf" type. I say fern-leaf type because I've never been certain of the ID on this one. I really don't think it's tennuifolia, but it may be some other species fern-leaf type or an old hybrid. My original division of this plant came from a very old, abandoned garden probably 50-60 years old. I can post a photo of the plant and flowers if anyone wants to see it.

Anyway, I've never seen nodules like this on a peony. My first thought was some kind of nitorgen-fixing bacteria were responsible, but I really don't have a clue. Any thoughts? The plant has never shown signs of any disease or problems.

Such nodules on many plants can be caused by nematodes. Also bacteria Agrobacterium tumefaciens can cause distortions on roots

My thoughts, also. But with such density, I'd lean toward crown gall.

I'm happy I posted this. How about root-knot nematode? I found this previous thread on GW. Looks like it's curable.

What's really odd is that this plant has shown no signs of decline. It's been growing and blooming for years now.

Here is a link that might be useful: root-knot
