Echinacea Cheyenne Spirit

I purchased seed early summer 2013 and sowed in mid July. This summer they have all bloomed. Most are orange toned yellows. Some start orange and age to a deeper red. They vary in height and habit as well. Some are just over 12 inches and others are over two feet. I am enjoying them and started a few more this year as well. Hoping they all overwinter well and turn out to be good survivors.

Beautiful. I was worrying because these are supposedly hybrids. Lovely Pictures.

My young plants have been tough as nails so far, with near 100% survival unmulched after the past severe winter.

It will be interesting to see what happens with the next generation of self-sown plants.

My experience (through my nursery owner/propagator friend) has been that the vigor is lacking (compared to E. purpurea) and we'll both wait for something more vigorous and less fussy.

Last year I purchased a flat of 18 Cheyenne Spirit seedlings in small pots, on sale about $1.50 each. Planted them out in the "xeric" garden. Pretty sure they all survived the winter and some plants were bigger than others, but that is normal with the genetic variation of seedlings. Almost all bloomed this summer, but generally not profusely. Got a range of colors from red, orange, peach, mauve, pink, yellow, and white.

Overall a nice variety and I'm interested to see how they do over the next couple years. I'm thinking because they're seedlings that they might be more hardy and less fussy than some of the hybrid cultivars like the Big Sky series.

Vigor isn't lacking at all. They have been amazing.
