you are interchanging the words frost and freeze ...

but the issue is HEAVE.. in spring ...

one should .... in z5 and colder.. move plants early enough.. so they can grab hold.. and not pop back out of the ground.. during the thaw process in spring ...

i dont know where you are.. but most of us in z5.. will be doing this anytime now.. thru about mid october..

i think you are a bit early with your mid sept comment.. since that is 4 days from now ... and i doubt any of us in z5 will be getting a frost .. or God forbid.. a freeze that soon .. [but then.. who expected the drought and heat wave.. lol] ...

LOL Again you are so right. I meant frost date not freeze. Thanks for the advice. So I guess i can start moving some things around. Love doing this! I absolutely love working outside in the fall and wish it would hurry up and get here!

the beauty of fall in z5 .. is that warm days.. keep the soil warm for some fall root growth ... and usually the days are not hot enough to suck all the moisture out of the ground .... and the cool nights allow a recovery period period before the next warmish day ...

and its not really that the plants 'grab hold' .. its that the soil will settle enough to hold the plant in the ground.. of course it depends on how big the pieces are. and whether there is soil attached to weigh them in ...

you ask nice simple questions.. that everyone who reads them.. can learn from ... and that is why i take the time to answer them as best i can ...
