 o
Shade/Part-shade Plant to Drape Over Raised Bed

Posted by daysquid 7 Annapolis, MD (My Page) on

I am looking for a plant to put on the edge of a raised bed that will drape 1' - 2' over the edge. I'd like the plant to have dark green foliage,a blue/green foliage, or a purple foliage. I'm a being too picky? Thank you in advance for any and all suggestions.

Would geraniums work? Not sure if the foliage would meet your requirements for color, but it is pretty foliage. I have some biokovo planted along the edge of a stone wall which I'm waiting for to grow a bit more and start to drape.

You might try Lysimachia congestiflora 'Persian Chocolate' to get purplish/dark foliage.

These both look worth looking into. And I just saw a picture of ajuga black scallop that looked like it was draping over a wall...hmmm. Thanks for the suggestions!

The old trick about going to the nursery in the season you're interested in flowering to find what you like & purchase on the spot. Sounds like you're interested in a groundcover and fall is great to plant.

Some things that I've grown that might work.

light green - Lamium 'Aurea'

dark green - London Pride saxifraga, nice scalloped edges & offsets creep, tender tuberous begonia, serbian bellflower (flowering stems really trail), pachysandra upright as well as trailing stems (plus fragrant)

dark green - many fuchsias are lax & would work, sweet box, hardy ginger, vinca minor

I'm liking the looks of London Pride saxifraga and lady's mantle is also a strong candidate...Anything with purple foliage?

You could try purple Oxalis triangularis (Shamrock).

Oxalis looks nice. I think I might have to include the light blue/green with the purple foliage. Yummy.

A small shrub that might work is Leucathoe which naturally arches and at least some of them have dark green leaves, though some have reddish foliage.

The leucathoe has me intrigued...nice suggestions.

I wonder if you could get a heuchera to drape. It certainly wouldn't "trail", but perhaps "drape". Some beautiful purple-foliaged heucheras out there.

Oh, never mind. I just re-read and see you want 1 to 2 feet of drapage, lol.

Does it have to be a perennial? I have sweet potato vines in both chartreuse and dark purple draped over my walls.

 o

No. It doesn't have to be a perennial. Don't potato vines get huge? And the heuchera idea may work as a transitional draper -- just to start the look of spilling over -- and then to transition to something with more overhang.

Saponaria officinalis drapes beautifully for me in bright shade and part shade. I don't think it would flower much in full shade.

Do you guys have any pictures of your drapping plants?

And now I'm open to more shades of foliage...

Here is a picture of Lysimachia congestiflora 'Persian Chocolate' draped over a container. It would definitely meet your 1 ft. requirement.

Isnt "Redstone Falls" heucherella advertised as being a trailer? I am just not sure how far it will trail. Maybe a GW member has some experience with one.

Ooh, I may have to get that Redstone Falls. I think it will work perfectly in a perennial container planting I have!

I have Dianthus 'Bath's Pink', draped over railway ties of a raised bed. It has lovely, quite blue foliage all year round. The only negative aspect is that it doesn't flower as much as it would if in full sun. This area is probably half shade, especially in summer.

My favorite trailing plant is geranium "Roseanne"..beautiful clear blue flower, blooms all summer.

I am just not sure how Rozanne would perform in "shade to part shade" aspect.

^Diminished flowering for sure, but I think it would do okay. Not sure if it would drape 1-2 feet though.

Something like Vinca minor 'illumination' would though.
