OK, so all year long I've been thinning and dividing and have been continually perplexed by effective ways to pass along the plants so as to not throw them out. CL worked for awhile until I got tired of people flaking out. I gave a lot away to friends, I even packed up a box of plants to send to my Mom. Still, that barely made a dent. Light bulb: What about Habitat for Humanity? They build these awesome new houses and surely they might benefit from some free plants? Sure enough, they loved the idea and yesterday I brought over 25 big pots of various plants. Daylilies, echinacea, scabiosa, shasta daisies, and penstemon. The manager used to work at nurseries, and she knows her stuff, so I felt confident leaving them in her hands. I even got to claim a nice cash value for my tax return. A perfect win-win. Now that I've found this solution I think I can keep them outfitted in plants for the foreseeable future, yay! I'm passing along this idea to others since this is a common dilemma for us all. Karin

Excellent idea. What about patented plants? Garden phlox 'Peppermint Twist' is one which I find very vigorous and it's necessary to divide it periodically to keep it looking good. At the same time, I don't want too much of any one plant (cultivar) in our garden.

No problem w/ giving away patented plants, just a problem if you wanted to sell them. If one doesn't have a habitat for humanity locally, many cities have non-profit plant-reuse efforts; you just have to hunt for them.

Yes, if Habitat for Humanity isn't near you, then I bet there are other places that could use plants. For example, around here a new cancer support center was looking for donations of new plants from the nursery, this was going to be my next phone call if Habitat didn't work out. The senior center was also a possibility.

There are also some schools, charities, or religious organizations that will hold "garage sales" to raise money. If one can find such, that would be yet another avenue.

Great info, karin_mt. I have been passing them along to friends and neighbors, taking them to plant swaps and posting them on freecycles. I will post them on freecycles again next spring. Posting on craigslists resulted in only one taker who did not show up at the last minute. I suppose a car full of plants for $15 was still too expensive for people. Maybe I will post an offer on freecycles again then add that I want potting soil so I can use it for winter sowing. A poster here used to hold plant sales. I wanted to follow her foot steps, but never had the grumption to pot up the plants and be organized enough in spring.
