Help.. Please!!

This is my problem with my tall phlox. It has not bloomed this year. Every plant thru out my garden looks like this. I am at a loss at what to do. Should I dig them out, cut them down, spray with something? They have been such a staple in my garden and I really can`t figure it out. Thank you for helping. Lesley

RE: Help.. Please!!

Les, I would try to get the problem identified by a professional. Either take some of the leaves to a nursery and ask someone knowledgeable there, or is there a state program for agriculture? Here in MA, there is one and they offer the service of disease identification, where you can send a sample to them and they will test it and tell you what the problem is. I have no idea what the problem is with that phlox leaf. It doesn't look familiar.

If it's not possible to identify it, I would do what I normally do with the phlox. If you wait until spring or cut them back in the fall after they've gone dormant, and just cross your fingers and see what happens next year.

As PM2 says:

I went out into our garden and couldn't see any phlox leaves that looked very like this. The brown (necrotic parts: yes), overall no.

There are other fungal diseases of phlox besides powdery mildew.

For a garden centre, take the leaf in a sealed clear plastic bag!

I'm just guessing here --- scale, perhaps?

Good advice to go to a garden center with a large sample in a plastic bag as Pm2 and SB said. That's what I'd do, and have done, whenever I'm not sure. Go to a full service place with a horticultural staff; they'll be able to identify the problem with a quick look.
