My kids follows what I always say. So I am confident that they won't get harmed by this poisonous plant. However, how do I protect other kids in our area? I see a other kids walking in our backyard, sometimes on the other open lot and playing. I'm worried that they might pull it. I have never seen anyone though get close to my shrubs/plants. But I still want them to be safe.

hey arbo_return,

I showed a lot of pics to my kids including the flowers. I told them how dangerous they are. They are prepared for it. They usually don't touch my plants. They can't wait for me to sow it next year. Oh, I bought seeds last night so hopefully it should be here by weekend.

Can ricin be released if I break the seed with a hammer? I read that when ricin is inhaled(other than ingestion), it is dangerous. I'm asking this so that I become more aware of its features. :)

I have always loved how this plant looks too. I still need to find a source for the seeds so I can try it myself next year. When I was researching it last year I found that people who were concerned about the seeds would cut off the flower before any seeds were formed. Of course that means you can’t save any seeds yourself (someone suggested bagging one flower as it ripened with a mesh bag). I really like the dark leaved ones especially.

I was in Montreal last year and found lots of these growing in public parks where any kid could approach and eat a seed. However, when you see one growing, the seed pods don’t really look that edible, being all spiny and sea-urchin like. I went up close and examined them to see if any seeds were ripe but they weren’t that far along. Maybe they are more tempting when the pods burst open, but it’s hard to imagine.

My kids (almost grown now) were never tempted to eat anything in the garden, they wouldn’t even help themselves to cherry tomatoes. They both love raw broccoli but it took persuasion and assurances that it was safe, that it was really broccoli, before they would go out and snap off a piece. It’s like they didn’t recognize it as food unless they saw it in the kitchen!

I found your old post when I did a search. I'm curious, Did you ever grow these? I finally got some seeds myself just last week...in another public park! Of course I have no idea which variety they are. They were burgundy red, about 8 ft in height. Not as red as in your picture. Red with a strong green cast.
