Many of these plants generally like to be grown in full sun. How much shade will the following plants tolerate

Balloon Flower
Bell Flower
Bluestar
Geramium

Thanks.

Paul

Platycodon (Balloon flower) really wants pretty much full sun.

Geraniums vary--G. maccrorhizum (Big Root Geranium) can take considerable shade, and dry shade at that. Some others prefer a little afternoon shade. Others want a lot of sun.

Bluestar--botanical name please.

Bell Flower (Campanula, I think)--will tolerate some afternoon shade, some more than others.

I have balloon flower growing in full sun as well as dappled shade and have noticed no difference in the abundance of flowers on either. Just yesterday there was a new bloom on the plant that gets the most shade while the plant in full sun has ripe seedpods on it. These plants were grown from seed via winter sowing rather than nursery-grown which may account for their vigor.

Geranium Rozanne is still blooming in full sun. Other recently-planted geraniums, including a couple Biokovo, are lush and full growing in dappled shade. They were nursery-grown, purchased plants that haven't yet bloomed.

Bluestar = Amsonia. Unfortunately, it gets categorized as a sun or a shade plant. There seems to be a gray area for plant selection when the area is part shade.

Lots of post indicate Balloon flowers need sun. I wonder if it has to do with the zones.
Thanks.

I have some geranium biokovo in about half sun / half shade that do very well and bloom well. Same with the balloon flowers. The sun is afternoon sun, which may make a difference.

I was surprised to have some campanula reseed for me from an almost full-sun bed, about 40 feet away to a bed that gets about 30 seconds of morning sun and then is in full (albeit fairly bright) shade all day. The ones in the shade bed were shorter than the full sun bed, but also reseeded in late spring/early summer and bloomed in late summer (as opposed to being established plants in full sun, blooming in spring). The bloom was quite good on the shade plants, which was a pleasant surprise.

Paulsiu, there are hundreds of perennial geraniums and one that will thrive in about any type planting site that you could imagine. We'd need to know which geranium. If you are looking for one good for dry shade, try geranium nodosum - 'Svelte Lilac' is great in dry shade (bright light but no overhead sun) here.

I was thinking of Geranium 'Brookside'. Note that the site is essentially surrounded by trees and houses so gets like may be 4 hours of noon to afternoon sun. Longer in the summer, probably less in the winter. Some of the area also have trees overhead, cutting off even more light.

What do you mean by 'tolerate'? Is it just 'not die' or thrive and look good?
There is a difference between shade with open sky above the plants, and shade without open sky. Many plants without open sky will lean towards the light, eventually flopping. Campanula latifolia can grow and bloom on the north side of a house . Campanula lactiflora will surely flop. Geranium phaeum Samobor is perfect for such a situation. Geranium sylvaticum can grow under trees but likes to have some light from the side.

Paul if I'm reading right you are zone 5, so sun in winter is really not an issue. and 4 hours of noon to afternoon sun will be more intense than morning sun. My experience with balloon flower is that it would be fine with that amount of sun, many geraniums as well.

I have amsonia in full shade and it looks great. Stays upright, no flopping. It may bloom less than it would in sun but I like it for its foliage not for its blooms.
