| I am looking for an Astrilbe that's bold red. There appears to be several variety like: Fanal, Red Sentinel, and Etba. Which one is easier to grow and has a good red color (deep or bright red, and not pink or brown red).
In addition, most of these red then to top out at 2 ft. Are there ones that are taller like 3-5 feet?
Thanks.
Paul

Astilbe Red Catleya is tall, but it is pink red, at least on pictures. Glut (Glow) the same. If you think about bright red like oriental poppies, then I do not think there are any.

Of the two type of Astrilbe: arendsii and japonica, which one do you think is more hardy and drought tolerant in zone 5a? Paul

If memory serves, "Fanal" is a deeper, rich red; it is not tall, however. I'm not sure if red astilbe blooms fade as they age, taking on that pinky-red hue - ?.

You know, I think I'll try planting some big white Astribe in the back and then install the deep red Fanal in front of it.

Fanal fades to reddish rusty rather than pinky in my PNW garden. Some people spray paint them, but I've never...

My favorite red is 'Montgomery,' which is a japonica. It tops out at about 22". But it's the best red of all the ones I've tried.
