basement work and perennials need to come out

I live in Wisconsin and need to have 2 basement walls fixed...This being said, they will kill about 30 perennials unless I dig them up.
Can I even do this and can I leave them out all winter ?? |

| Can you quickly dig a little garden bed to hold them in till spring? i think if you potted them up you could bury them if you are worried about the roots tangling. That stinks having to do this, so late in the fall. And maybe if you liked the placement of the plants in their old spots you could draw a diagram or take a picture. Good luck! |

| Good advice about digging a temporary holding bed. Or, you could pot them up and hold them in the garage or shed overwinter. I've overwintered potted plants for many years in the unheated garaged, never lost one yet. Just make sure they're well watered before pulling into storage. |

| throw them in the veggie garden??? north side of a structure.. and whip them back in when they finish .. or cover with some hay .. or mulch ... get them dormant.. keep them dormant.. and you win .... big clumps of soil with them ... not bare root ken |

mxk3, do you think a screen porch would be the same as an unheated garage?if not, maybe a screen porch w/ blankets on top of the plants...? thanks, mindy |

| where or how.. SPECIFICALLY ... is IRRELEVANT ... the KEY is: get them dormant.. keep them dormant ... if the sun porch is on the south side.. i would submit that it could retain heat in late winter.. and be a zone or two warmer... and stuff could become active too early ... or not.. its specific to your little microcosm ... there is no way for us to guess ... how it will all work out .... trial and error is the bottom line ... a perennial ... zone appropriate.. can handle winter in a dormant stage .... get it growing too early .. and then it is hit with a late freeze or hard frost.. and it might perish ... or be set way back ... ken |

| thx mx... another summation ... WINTER IS NOT THE PROBLEM ... when and how spring occurs to the plant .. wherever you put it.. is the issue .. and then how you deal with it.. if you created a situation that is all out of phase with ma nature ... ya know.. she basically is humorless ... when you have a vested interest... ken |
