Mushrooms????

I have these things that look like potatoes growing near my mailbox under a 15 year old white oak, some are in the grass, a few are in the bark. Only about 1/2 inch of the things stick up through the grass...some are 3 inches in irregular circle,,,some are 4 or so. 3 weeks ago they were hard like a potato, looked almost exactly like a white russet submerged in the soil. Now they are cracking and splitting and almost opening up with a soft material inside that looks like a very dark gray flour....What are these? Some sort of puffball mushroom? Anybody have these?

Most puffball mushrooms are completely edible......and are considered very tasty. Obviously, if harvesting for food you want to gather them before they start sporing, but the spores are harmless also. No fears, Ken!!

FYI, they tend to produce spores in abundance - the giant puffball mushroom is alledged to contain 7 trillion spores in each puffball.
