| Has anyone tried growing Delosperma cooperi or Cooper's iceplant in zone 5a (near Chicagoland)? The plant appears to be similar to a sedium and need full sun and good drainage. Has anyone know if they are invasive in zone 5a?

| I tried it twice, but it didn't overwinter. I grow lots of sedums, and even some z6 plants, but this really doesn't like our hard winters. So, no, it's not invasive at all :-) |

| I don't live in your region, but am z5 and have been able to overwinter D. cooperi. This is my second year with it though, so have not had it terribly long. I think the key is super sharp drainage. I had a 'Mese Verde' a few years ago and made the mistake of planting it somewhere that got a little too much shade and run off from the roof. Didn't make it. The species one I have now is in an unprotected strip by the driveway in poor soil and gravel. I seem to recall it was a VERY late riser in the spring. Took so long to get going that it has remained pretty compact. CMK |

| Strictly an annual for me in my Michigan garden. |

| I'm in zone 7, but this is an awesome plant. It has been blooming nonstop since May. It is evergreen here and looks nice in the winter. I think I might try some as a houseplant. It's that nice! I'm edging all of my flower beds with it. Maybe you could overwinter some indoors over the winter just in case the plants outside die. They grow very fast. A cutting will often bloom before it roots. LOL. |

| I don't think it will thrive as a houseplant, em. That is unless you provide lots of extra artificial light. I know what you mean about how easy they are to propagate. It's almost hilarious. I love this plant in my Northern Alabama zone 7. Wouldn't do without it. It spreads readily, but I wouldn't call it invasive at all. |

| I have heard from others in my area that it is 'iffy'. Some people have gotten some of their plants to overwinter, but seem to not have complete success. More people have had failure than success... I'm guessing that CMK is right on target saying that you will have no success unless you have great winter drainage. | OK, Drainage is probably not good enough around here to grow it. I was wondering, has anyone try growing it in an hanging container and hang it outside? What do you do when winter comes since it needs more like than inside. Do you just leave it outside? Paul |

If you were to grow it in any sort of container you would probably want to make sure it contained a good deal of gravel or that cactus grit stuff for extra drainage. I doubt you could grow it in your house very well. Maybe stick it in an unheated garage or something like that over winter?? CMK |

| I tried growing it one year in the spaces between the rocks in a dry stone wall. Other plants (Campanulas, sedums, allysum) did fine, and the Delosperma grew fine, but it didn't overwinter. I am planning to try again, both in a differently sited rock wall and in the ground on a hill where it will get snow cover, but have sharp drainage. I think I am pushing this plant's hardiness limits, however. |

| I have it in full sun in a dryish raised bed. Although it is exposed to the sprinklers. It has survived but not getting bigger either. Wouldn't recommend it. |

| I have done a search for Delosperma Reznicek on GW and nothing. Is there any reason to think it is any hardier or 'prettier' than the above more common "Ice Plants"? |

| After being told these wouldn't live indoors, I tried some cuttings. I put them under an aquarium light. They all rooted and have been blooming off and on all winter. They are now trailing out of the pot. I think those who can't over-winter them could easily grow them indoors. People use simple aquarium lights for growing all sorts of plants indoors. Every cutting I tried rooted and grew well indoors. I'm pretty sure they would grow in a bright window without the extra lighting. |
